Richard Seymour returns to PTO to discuss the crisis and background to the crisis in Israel-Palestine. A little over a week ago US national security advisor Jake Sullivan, speaking at the the Atlantic festival, rattled off a list of positive developments in the Middle East which he argued had allowed the Biden administration to focus on issues elsewhere in the world. Referencing the truce in Yemen, a decline in hostility in the US's relationship with Iran and what he characterised as America's stable presence in Iraq - where around 2,500 US soldiers remain -  he commented that “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.”

On Saturday Sullivan's comments came back to haunt him as Hamas carried out an unprecedentedly large scale breakout from the Gaza strip and launched attacks on the Israeli military and Israeli civilians that have claimed over 1200 lives at the time of recording. Deaths on the Palestinian side from Israel's predictable assault on Gaza are heading towards parity, and undoubtedly those numbers will escalate dramatically as Israel continues its air campaign and prepares to launch a ground assault.  The following interview with Richard Seymour was recorded earlier today - the 11th of October - and before it became apparent that a national unity government would be formed in Israel.

Early in 2003, the American writer and polymath Walt Mundkowsky (1944-2020) introduced me to Italo Calvino’s "Cosmicomics".  'Qfwfq' (composed between August and November 2003) is a token of thanks for this and other favours.  The piece’s skittering counterpoint (in up to four parts) is an attempt to portray in music the quirky sense of humour of the book’s cartoonish central figure Qfwfq.

The music’s ground rules change subtly at the start of each of the work’s three sections, as well as after the three short interjections of very quiet chordal music, giving the piece a gnomic character very much in keeping with Qfwfq’s own very mercurial nature. 

'Qfwfq' is dedicated to Walt Mundkowsky and was first performed on 18th December 2006 at The Warehouse, London SE1 by Jonathan Powell.

This performance, also by Jonathan Powell, was given at Rosslyn Hill Chapel, London NW3 on 20th May 2011.

Huge density of this tiny frog chorusing like hell around a little pond in a little forest, Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Also present, the 斑腿樹蛙 Polypedates megacephalus (Hallowell, 1861) invasive species in Taiwan.
The site is located near little factories and roads, the background noise hasn't been filtered.
Recorded with two Sennheiser MKH40 and Zaxcom Maxx.

L’été derrière la fenêtre ce sont les voix d’enfants dits autistes dans la parenthèse de leurs vacances à la campagne. Des oscillations sonores pour donner à entendre un monde intérieur, tantôt naïf, tantôt angoissant, à priori imperceptible, et tenter de raconter un peu ces « gamins-là ».

Neon Through My Tears

British composer James Erber was born in 1951 in London of an Austrian father and an English mother. After studying Music at the Universities of Sussex (BA, 1973) and Nottingham (MA, 1975), he was appointed Music Editor at Peters Edition, London. He left Peters Edition in 1979 and began work as a freelance editor, writer and translator.  Still largely self-taught as a composer, it was at this period he produced his first acknowledged score, "Seguente" for oboe and piano (1976-1978, revised 1980). The guidance and encouragement he received from Brian Ferneyhough (whom he had met at Peters Edition) prompted him to a serious study of composition, firstly with Jonathan Harvey at the University of Sussex (MPhil in Composition, 1983), then from 1981 to 1982 with Ferneyhough himself at the Musikhochschule, Freiburg-im-Breisgau. In 1984, at Ferneyhough’s suggestion, he made the first of five visits to the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, winning a Stipendienpreis in 1988. From 1982 to 2016, he combined activity as a composer with teaching and lecturing. Since 2016 he has been able to concentrate solely on composition. 
James Erber's work reflects a wide range of interests, including Renaissance and Baroque music, the music of South-East Asia, Jazz, blues, Mediaeval and Renaissance philosophy, Kabbalah, green politics, recent scientific developments, film noir, Jacobean tragedy, the Gothic novel and historical slang.  His music is multi-layered and complex (especially from the point of view of rhythm and form). Its complexity is, however, combined with harmonic clarity and lyricism as well as a tenuous sense of optimism and a concern with intellectual and spiritual continuity.
It has been performed and broadcast widely by soloists such as Pavlos Antoniadis, Antonella Bini, Mario Caroli, Diego Castro Magaš, Matteo Cesari, Franklin Cox, Gianpaolo Antongirolami, Gleb Kanasevich, Carin Levine, Ian Pace, Jonathan Powell, Nancy Ruffer and Michele Selva, as well as by ensembles including 175 East, the Arditti Quartet, Duo Galeano/Javaid, Exposé, ELISION, Lontano and NOISE. James Erber’s music has been recorded on NMC, Metier, Centaur Records (USA) and Convivium Records. Many of his scores are available from Composers Edition. In July 2022, his complete writings on music (1978-2021) were published by Vision Edition under the title "Fragile Continuities".
