James Gregory was born in Melbourne, Australia.

Gregory was first attracted to music after listening to his parents record collection. He acquired his first guitar when he was about 15 years old, which was kindly given to him by a local blues guitarist after teaching Gregory some guitar lessons. Gregory was heavily influenced by blues, rock and funk music, and practiced long hours to learn the guitar.

Gregory went on to study at MWT Institute were he received his diploma of music (Composition). During this time, he put down the guitar for a period to learn the piano. At MWT Institute, Gregory gained a thorough understanding of music theory and the workings of the music industry, while focusing on sound recording to create songs, soundtracks and to record instruments.
