For the third episode of their show Unravel, James Lotion has invited the Berlin based queer music nerd Golden Medusa for a digital B2B. 

On the contrary to a classic B2B this one was recorded from their homes in Copenhagen and Berlin over a period of two weeks of sharing emails. One by one they recorded a part of the mix, each time responding to the previous recording. 

The result is a moody, chuggy adventure featuring downtempo moments, erratic breaks, emotional melodies and experimental sound design.

In solidarity with the Palestinian people they end the mix with Jessika Khazrik's track Kushajam's Recital استظهار كُشاجم - which revisits an Abbasid poem around a cosmic water clock, written by a 10th c. Palestinian poet.''

Unravel #6 w/ James Lotion & ābnamā (13/11/21)

James Lotion (they/them) is a Dutch DJ that fell in love with experimental sounds and dance floor rhythms while dancing at DIY raves in Holland, and continued to explore this love from behind the DJ booth when they relocated to Copenhagen in 2012.

James Lotion has a genre-bending and eclectic approach to DJ-ing and is inspired by the raw and experimental sounds of techno, rave and other adventurous club sounds. They believe that the dance floor can be a place for self-exploration and emotional healing, so their sets are as much for the body as for the mind, and take you on a journey of changing energies, wild selections and ecstatic melodies. 

Back in 2015 they co-founded the queer and trans DJ collective SWEAT, that hosts parties and events with focus on uplifting queer, trans and non-binary artists and creating safer dance floors in Copenhagen and Malmö. 

In 2021 they kicked-off a bi-monthly residency called Unravel at Retreat Radio, an online radio station in based in Malmø, Sweden. In this show James Lotion turns their current state of mind into an hour of off-dance floor music therapy. 

They are a resident DJ at the club Ved Siden Af in Copenhagen and is represented by their agency Another Name.

Influences: 
I am inspired by a wide variety of genres and love to puzzle unexpected tracks together in my mixes. For me music is a way to heal and reflect on life, so my sets always follow my current state of mind. Sometimes it is dark and moody with experimental techno, rave, hardcore and bass and other times it is uplifting and playfull with early trance, breaks, electronica and electro.

James Lotion is a Berlin-based DJ known for genre-bending sets that bring playful, sexy, and unapologetically queer energy to the floor. Blending house, techno and offbeat club sounds, his selections are all about joy, expression, and emotional release.

Longtime label friend James Lotion is a Dutch transplant living in Copenhagen. As part of the queer and trans DJ collective SWEAT, they hosts parties and events with focus on uplifting queer and trans artists and creating safer dance floors at club nights in Copenhagen and Malmö. 

In their own words: 

‘’I feel very inspired and empowered by artists that use their music as a platform for their activism, and decided to highlight some of their work in this mix.
There is a lot to tell about many of these artists, but here is a (very) short intro to three artists that are particularly dear to me.’’

DJ Hvad (Danish for What) is a well-known experimental artist from Copenhagen who o.a. uses his music and performances to speak out against racism and the anti-immigration policies of the Danish government.

Terre Thaemlitz is an ambient artist/composer that focuses on themes of gender and sexual identity, sex work and the HIV crisis. I highly recommend checking out her work and writings on comatonse.com

Utra-Red and is a LA-based group that explores urban social relations o.a. through sound recordings. Their song N30, which I included in this mix, is fx. composed exclusively from site recordings made during street protests against the World Trade Organization Third Ministerial Conference in Seattle in 1999.

A creative B2B project between @anna-adams-dd and @james-lotion, recorded during COV-19 isolation in our homes in Dresden and Copenhagen.

The concept:  One person starts with a 15 min mix, and shares this plus the last track with the other. The second person records another 15 min and shares this plus the last track with the first person etc.

The result is a journey of 80min of high-energy trance, techno and electro.
