"Thar' be Whales here, Captain" - The world’s biggest animals emit a collection of sounds that are composed of repetitive and predictable patterns. One of the most “musical” species is the humpback because it can make sounds that are similar to the sound of humans singing. Another well-known musician is the Greenland whale, which is able to create different sounds each and pass them on to future generations. Cetaceans are creatures that are known for the “music” they use to communicate with each other underwater. These animals have poor vision so they use these “songs” to locate each other. An interesting fact about whales is that they sing underwater and the sound can carry faster than it does in the air. Sound travels at a speed of 500 meters per second underwater, whereas it travels at 340 meters per second on land. Their sounds also have to cover more distance. Whales can talk to their family members from several miles away!

THE DRIFTER - a conceptual and creative collaboration between Terry Wigmore (Canada), Ray Brookes (Australia) and James Bell (UK)

I had an idea for a song influenced by the Ennio Morricone Spaghetti Western soundtracks of the 1960s. It was basically just a chord sequence played on acoustic guitar and a "whistling" melody. I recorded the idea on a voice app on my Kindle and sent it to my friend Terry in Canada to see what he thought. Terry quickly came back with a solid bedrock of instrumentation (drums, bass, distorted guitar, acoustic guitar, electronic elements and fx), lyrics and a superb lead vocal perfect for the project. Emails were exchanged discussing further ideas and more samples and fx were added to the mix and some "spoken dialogue" devised. Ray Brookes then joined in with the fun contributing some superb Slide guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica.
Terry then crafted a final mix and "The Drifter" was born. Hope you enjoy our "Wild West" extravaganza.
