Terror Rising Show (Skylab Radio)

One of Australia’s most mysterious jazz long players. The eponymous creation of Queensland pianist Robert Welsh. Originally released in 1986, Singing Dust offers a dynamic collection of songs, rich in expressive performance and compositional sophistication. Inspired by the sounds of Indian devotional song, the jazz piano styles of Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett, English folk and Debussey’s tonal impressions, this is a work of true dedication and posterity that will appeal to many serious music lovers.

Spectra! represents a lone, anomaly release by illusive producer and recording artist J. Walker of Perth, Western Australia. Recorded and produced in 2016, Spectra! comprises a collection of 12 instrumental works composed in response to an imagined brief investigating the refined shades and pigments of colour.

Whilst stylistically somewhat comparable to library music recordings from Europe released throughout the 1980’s, Walker’s compositions never step too closely toward facsimile. Instead, they maintain a unique sense of identity, one closer akin to a born-too-late contemporary interpretation of the sentimentality and lost moods that allowed library music it’s point of difference and charm in the first place. Unlike many modern artists who flirt with the past, Walker isn’t concerned with carbon copying the sound palate and tape hiss of yesterday. In these works, antecedent emotional and harmonic bodies are given new life and form by means of modern studio hardware, Recommended for fans of the Coloursound Library and Joël Vaandroogenbroeck.

This mix is sort of my personal take on downtempo, the majority of the mix is made up of 90s/early 00's goa trance records at 33RPM (pressed at 45). Fortuitously a large portion of these I obtained cheaply in Sydney while recording shopping with Danny Wild following a Moontown Records party I DJd in October 2019. This mix is for the fans of the nocturnal, darker side of downtempo electronica. Please enjoy" @james-tom / @krakatau-melbourne

Hyperborea is Melbourne's boundlessly erudite prog auteur James Tom. Tom is perhaps most noted recently as the figurehead and synth/keyboardist of Krakatau, whose stunning debut LP 'Water Near A Bridge' on Trouble In Mind cut deep into the (sub)consciousness of critics and fans alike with its stillness and restraint, peacefully purposeful at the heart of its dewy construction. As Hyperborea, Tom focuses more closely on synth arrangements, textures and instrument voicings as a centerpiece as opposed to the bass/drums/synth trio core of Krakatau. Following on from a short split release with Straylight on Airline Tapes, 'Associations Of Time' offers a satisfying tide of lush densities and contemplative travelogues within which time overlaps itself or indeed stops altogether, suspended in air. Care is taken in every detail and choice behind each synth tone, peripheral atmosphere and the delicately dynamic mix itself. Tones lightly bounce and intermingle with bio-elasticity at certain moments and carve out deeply meditative lines throughout others, creating a mournful, gently inward-bound trip through the verdant backwoods of a collected memory.
