Piano Quintet No. 2

"Basically I wanted to replicate the sensation of looking at a rotating Chinese vase. You can see the same motives again and again and again, but your perception is always different each time. You may notice a beautiful hidden detail here, a fine line there, then the irregular glazing, perhaps some cracks on the surface, its elegance, its purpose, its age, etc. Maybe you end up contemplating life itself? 
MING is just a "one-bar composition” that Michael Bonaventure repeats using the endless possibilities of the UTOPA organ at the Orgelpark. 
MING refers to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) but it is also an homage to my dear friend composer Chao-Ming Tung who turned 50 this year." LHY

Two movements from a performance of Olivier Messiaen's 'Quatuor pour la fin du temps' (1941) by Apartment House - Anton Lukoszevieze, cello, Mira Benjamin, violin, Heather Roche, clarinet, and Philip Thomas, piano. Apartment House's performance is unusual in avoiding dramatic phrasing and use of vibrato etc. It was released on CD alongside Linda Catlin Smith's composition 'Among the Tarnished Stars' (1998), for the same instrumentation.
