“I started making these ravey tunes to play out at gigs, but they gathered a momentum and gradually formed this E.P. I came back to it again and again – it seemed to work in clubs but also as a sneaky, immersive headphone listen. I love the feel of an almost overwhelming percussive violence being suddenly flooded with heartache and melody. I find that dynamic exhilarating.

I really wanted this E.P. to capture that. I hope you enjoy listening to it!”

Jon Hopkins - I Remember (Nils Frahm Dub Interrupt Remix)

We're hoping you don't need spelling out why this was great, but just in case you have missed an entire movement in electronic music:  Logos 's 2013 album  Cold Mission  on Keysound was one of the defining records of the new instrumental grime generation, and along with  Mr Mitch 's  Parallel Memories  is conclusive proof that this sound can and does work in the long-play format. We're naturally excited about a new release, and the new EP on Different Circles, complete with freaky ambient sections and a  Shapednoise  remix, doesn't disappoint in the slightest. It's  out on the 18th May .

Logos "Glass" - Boiler Room Debuts

The LHF collective have always in some ways been the shadowy soul of Dusk and Blackdown's Keysound label. Pirate radio obsessed, shrouded in smoke and London mythology, always chasing the essence of underground sound in the dark alleys between genres and historical realities, they encapsulate so much that links the other artists on the label. It's been a little while since their last release, but thankfully they're still as ghostly but imposingly present as ever. This album is almost entirely done by founding member Amen Ra, and this track is as crisp a bit of fever-dream 2-step as you could hope for.

LHF "Triumph" - Boiler Room Debuts

"LHF's members include Amen Ra, Double Helix, No Fixed Abode, Low Density Matter, Octaviour, Escobar Seasons, Solar Man, and Lumin Project. Their debut album 'Keepers of the Light' was an expansive collection of tracks drawing on various strains of music that evolved out of the British rave movement - jungle, 2-step, and grime included, but with a particular interest in dubstep. Their second album, 'For The Thrown' is an extension of these ideas, but it takes more of a step into the unknown. Take Amen Ra and Octaviour's new track (and album opener) Gateway for example: you can hear familiar snatches of sounds and rhythms from the UK underground, but the approach is more abstracted, turning it into a haunting, meditative, ambient piece of music."

Wood Brass & Steel - My Darling Baby

In Hour 2 it's a mix from the excellent reissue label Athens of the North. Label owner Euan Fryer has always worked hard to find the most interesting reissue material for his label, from Deep Soul Ballads to Tropicália. His taste is driven by his record collecting, which is in turn driven by the dance floor where ultimately these records should be played (yes even the slowys!). As well as searching out old and exotic records he’s working on new music with Linkwood and several other producers and musicians. He recently co-produced ‘Galaxies Like Grains Of Sand’: a collaboration between pianist Greg Foat and Warren Hampshire from the Grammy-nominated rock band The Bees, which was released last month to critical acclaim.

Solid Steel Radio Show 4/8/2017 Hour 2 - Athens Of The North

Three emotional years in the making, Be With and Efficient Space finally present Steve Hiett’s Girls In The Grass. Pressed alongside the long awaited reissue of his one-shot masterpiece Down On The Road By The Beach, these ten balearic soul instrumentals are of equal necessity; unrivalled beauty rescued from the fashion photographer-guitarist’s Paris Tapes (1986-1997). 

While recordings unintended for release should often be approached with caution, this is a rare case of unheard material being assembled as an indispensable and coherent piece. Girls In The Grass is something super special. The light and shadow that defines Hiett’s music is arguably more compelling here. It speaks to us in a language that feels profound, yet entirely comforting and familiar. 

Girls In The Grass reintroduces Hiett’s languid electric blues boogie, crafted on Saturday afternoons with fellow art director Simon Kentish. Kentish would cook, pour some wine and then utilise his arsenal of technology. He’d dial up a chugging rhythm, together with some ambient pads or keyboard textures, and anchor the weightless gauze of Hiett’s six-stringed touch. 

Hiett’s guitar sings with the same clean, crisp tone as Down On The Road, animated by a carefree weekend groove. Unlike his defining album which was boiled under pressure, these subsequent sessions have all the time in the world. The naïve melodies chart a missing link between Vini Reilly’s ventures into electronica and Booker T, sounding like sun-warped takes on wordless, fractured non-hits from his heroes The Beach Boys. 

Remastered for public pleasure by Simon Francis, these private moments are adorned with Hiett’s singular photography and feature typically idiosyncratic liner notes from Mikey IQ Jones.

A vibrant kaleidoscope of sound, colour and emotion, British multi-hyphenate James Alexander Bright’s songs soundtrack fertile daydreams, esoteric dancefloors, languorous reflection, and wild excursions in nature and beyond. His voice, pitched somewhere between Eddie Chacon, Beck and Michael McDonald, is an immediately recognisable signature while impressive multi-instrumentalism sees him perform on guitar, keys, programming, percussion, production and myriad quirky effects.

The past six years has seen James release a veritable treasure trove of music: ‘Mallorca’ and ‘Strange Folk’ EPs, debut album ‘Headroom’, joyous second ‘Float’, an album of collaborations and reworks with cosmic Americana-disco DJ/producer duo Flying Mojito Bros, and a new project with Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay as Bright & Findlay. 

James’ music making is commonly a family affair. Although initially written and recorded at his home studio in the rolling hills of the Hampshire countryside, his tracks involve regular collaborator Peter Lyons in East London alongside old friends and new to contribute vocals (Kerry Leatham and Katharine Alice) and drums (Gillan McLaughlin and Joris Feiertag). He has also collaborated with Letherette, Daudi Matsiko, Fink, Fred Everything, Scrimshire and contributed three songs to Groove Armada’s ‘Edge Of The Horizon’ album 

James balances music alongside the creative duality of a job in illustration and the responsibilities and constraints that come with raising a young family. Utilising any spare moment to write and record new ideas, his creative output under various projects had been relentless. Turning his back on apathetic major label offers in his early 20s, he’s released through cult DIY label Tape Club Records, German stalwart !K7 Music and now with Scottish tastemaker Athens Of The North, presenting an evolving vision of a sound that has touched on everything from outsider art-rock to machine funk, mystic folk to experimental jazz.

His music has been played across BBC Radio, Amazing Radio, Bandcamp Weekly, FIP Radio France, NTS, KCRW, Soho Radio, Triple J, and Worldwide FM.
