Ribbons

A rough demo of my song "Tuned". Also called "You Know".

Constructing new and different sort of guitar and lyrical style components in "Tuned" was a meticulous process for me - I wrote a lot that didn't make it into the final song. 
The style of this piece is heavily influenced by the great Nick Drake.
I see this song as a step in writing songs with picking patterns and using alternative, non-conventional tunings. The tuning I use here is CADGAD.

I hope you enjoy this song, I've put a lot into it.

"Brighter Later" is a revisit of an original already on my Soundcloud. The previous title for the track was "Bright Futures".

The cover art for this song was taken at Southwold Beach in England when I was over there in 2014. I think the colours and textures are really nice.

Brighter Later (Rough Demo)

"Tuned" written, sung and performed on acoustic guitar and piano by James Derwent.

This is a song I wrote (tuned to CADGAD) in 2014 and have finally finished a recording that I'm happy with. Experimenting with instrumentation was interesting for this one - the process lead me to include a delicate piano accompaniment highlighting the bass and improvising secondary melodies along with the original guitar and vocals.

Tuned

After learning the vague idea of the difficult picking to "Man in a Shed" by Nick Drake, I did a little recording to see how it sounds. Here it is.

Just a little taste of something I came up with using the loop pedal, all done live with a little tapping on the guitar and some guitar bowing too.
Keep an eye one this one, it'll be more than just a little loop one day :)

UPDATE: since then, I've turned this idea into a full song titled "Dancing Fire". I look forward to recording and uploading it in the future.

Tuned (acoustic demo)

This is an early draft of the first two movements from my composition "Firelights". 

This draft was submitted for my Margaret Schofield Memorial Scholarship application for composition.

The original idea for this piece was to tune to an open tuning (open Eb minor) and use all of the chords from a harmonic minor scale, using a non-repeating progression and I've discovered atmospheres and expressions within this piece along the way, some that remind me of Debussy Clair de Lune.
I have ambitious plans for this piece in the future, particularly in terms of instrumentation and further movements.

Firelights (preview)

This one is an old song and probably the one that's stuck with me the most over the test of time. I re-recorded and arranged this one for my uni composition auditions, and now I've had some more time to add to it since. I really enjoy writing drum parts in particular, but also got to work with some vocal harmonies, piano, and electric guitar parts in the texture. It's still a draft but I thought why not share it.

Tuned (demo 2017)

I'm a young Australian multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne and I love to write and play music, largely inspired by artists like Radiohead and Nick Drake. I also play in a duo called anonyMOUSE.

I write and play all kinds of music as a solo artist and in various collaborations. I'm inspired by a range of artists including Nick Drake, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters, Frédéric Chopin, Éric Satie and more.

I usually play my acoustic guitar or electric 7 string, sing, and also the piano, and make use of my loop and effects pedals. I create dynamic vocal and instrumental accompaniments with my loop pedal, and dedicated a year to studying this in VCE. 
I love composing and arranging songs and would like to expand my abilities with DAW tools and mixing my instruments with electronic sounds and pedals. I'd love to expand to more instruments, especially drums and percussion. I also collaborate with mates to mix with setups including drums, basses, cello, keys, violins and more.
