Long-time Italian electronic music pioneer Alexander Robotnick returns with a new album, ‘Simple Music’, this winter. Across eight tracks, he distils a lifetime of influences into fresh, forward-thinking disco cuts that bring a whole new vitality to the scene.

The legendary Robotnick (a nickname Maurizio Dami assumed in the 80s) is a towering name in Florentine music and someone who very much defined the early disco scene thanks to a superb run of enduring club cuts, not least his seminal 'Problèmes D'amour'. Although he is now in his 70s, he is still kicking out essential jams. His music features plenty of the arpeggios that have always given his music its character, coming on labels like Permanent Vacation, Clone, Bordello a Parigi and Bosconi Records. Few artists understand analogue machines and dance floor mechanics like this man, as he proves once more with this, his eighth studio album.

The concept of ‘Simple Music’ is to craft tunes for any setting. It is about combining traditional music parts, chords, melodies and songs to make music that is varied and vibrant and constantly evolving. Says Alexander, "Riffs and grooves are not endless, and when you are my age, you may have heard them already. I am having more and more trouble finding interesting tracks for myself, so I felt the need to produce “simple” music that generates genuine feelings in a music scene that can be averse to risk."

Seductive disco-house opener 'Babel' is about the difficulties of understanding each other, even if we speak the same language and culture. The vocoder vocals take centre stage next to lush chords, then 'It Is So Easy' has a smug character in the vocal refrain and a sneering attitude in the verses that is playful and characterful next to the rugged and punchy drum grooves. The brilliant 'Why' is built on elastic electro-disco and muses on a lover’s inconsistency, while the space disco of 'Underpass' is a dark vision of a late-night walk that channels the original Robotnick sound of the early 80s.

The heartbroken robot lullaby 'Virtual Empathy' is about "the empathic feelings induced by mainstream TV to manipulate mass consensus", whilst 'I Want To Know' finds Robotnick describing his dreams and wondering about their meaning over funky bass twangs and serene disco sounds. Then comes the only instrumental 'Intro-Robo' with its multi-layered arpeggios and the magnificent title track, which captures the whole essence of the album with taught retro bass, icy hi-hats and stiff rhythms that will jerk any floor into action.

Following two instalments which have featured tracks and remixes from Ashley Beedle, Felix Dickinson, A Certain Ratio, Sarah Bates and more, they deliver volume number three which rallies ALFOS' Hardway Bros, Polish artist Das Komplex, French selector Lea Lisa and Red Rack ‘Em for a collection of sounds that touch on Balearic vibrations, cosmic grooves and classic deep house.

“Bembe” (Bembé) comes from the Yoruba people of West Africa. Depending on the context, the term can refer to a kind of drum, an ethnic subgroup, a religious ceremony, a style of dance, or a genre of music. It is also the name of the track we were solicited to premiere from BlackFilter’s forthcoming digital/vinyl release on the delicious Italian label Ragoo Records. Pellegrino Mazzucchi, the mastermind behind the alias, is a percussionist, DJ, and producer based in Modena, Italy, and owner of a singular sonority that encompasses Latin, Afro, and World Music influences. 

The result of the fruitful partnership between Pellegrino and his fellow countryman Daddario gave birth to the stunning “Bembe”, a two-in-one theme that introduces itself complex percussive elements and mellow synth leads for 2.10 of its 4.41 minutes until the “futuristic Jazz with hints of Electro and Disco” aura jumps in and changes the game entirely, “offering the listener a sonic and refreshing sound experience”.

The instrumental version of DYSTOPIA was one of those tracks that when you hear it you instantly know you can do something with it. 
The track along with it's title and the artwork instantly started a story forming in my mind. 

I'm a big fan of MOFLOW RECORDS output and SXS in particular has always struck me as a super groovy producer so getting the opportunity to write and perform my story for DYSTOPIA was an absolute pleasure. 

So here is our vision of love the end of the world.

The poison rain was falling, the earth was shaking and the seas were boiling.

For its newest record, Public Release soars over the Atlantic and glides into Greece to convene with two brothers from Thessaloniki, Christos and Fotis Papadakis, for Cosmic Swimmer, a gentle, lilting sunbleached house escapade.

The 12-inch opens with their soft and cushy original mix of “Cosmic Swimmer”, a charmed layer cake of round, full-bodied hand drums, airy pads, and washed-out vocal harmonies. A breezy, wide-open endless groove that ambles along at a not-too-slow, not-too-fast Goldilocks pace that will easily keep you undulating on the floor or in your head. Another pair of brothers, the Soulwax boys, making a very rare, celebrated appearance here, take the reigns and fill out the arrangement by wrapping it all up in some stone-cathedral euphoric resonance and injecting it with their trademark finger-plucked bass struts. One of their top remixes ever? Perhaps.

The hot potato is then passed to New York City’s Kim Ann Foxman for her take, a more urgent and pressed affair that swaps the organic elements for jittery programmed percussion, strobed effects, and brittle synth licks, all the while somehow keeping the dusting of Balearic feel-good presence intact. Finally, Eric “Dr. Dunks” Duncan jumps into the frame with a tough love acid- flecked interpretation that thrusts the record into peak-hour rave territories.

For the digital edition, a bonus is offered, a peppy, saucy Hi-NRG piano number that has echoes of late-80s New Order. A carefree, cheeky encore that caps off the party with a bolt of electricity.
