Severn Beach rides the familial chord progression through a backdrop of 90s IDM signifiers, dipping out momentarily before returning double strength. Mat Playford continues his run of form with ace new track ‘ISON’. Beginning with a gurgling, snaking 303 and slamming beats, ‘ISON’ soon develops into piano house euphoria — but not
in a cheesy way. A looped old skool piano refrain mesmerisingly carries the track for a minute or two before some amazing, mazy jazz piano tickles the sensibilities. Boogie-woogie scale-traversing freestyling, some dynamite ivory-tinkling not seen on a dance track since ‘Uncertain Smile’ by The The, it totally makes ‘ISON’. Awesome.

Mr Beatnick is a scholar and a gentleman - a bona fide expert in everything soulful and strange, from jungle to Sun Ra, broken beat to retro drum machines, a very fine DJ indeed, and a general man about London town. In addition, since he turned his hand to four-to-the-floor beats with the majestic "Synthetes" in 2011, he's slyly become one of the best synthetic disco producers in the world. This one had us smiling and swaying in the office on first play, and will sound like pure gold in a party situation.
