IA Radio Show #102 with Vlaar

For the 36th mix in our series, GAB has the pleasure of presenting Rat Party, one of the most exciting projects currently emerging in Leeds. After discovering the trio of residents through Sable Radio and NARR, we simply had to invite in Rat Party who describe themselves as a queer, free party collective and family. 

Kicking things off with some gospel house, Rat Party’s GAB MIX quickly descends into the soundscapes of industrial techno. Pushing the tempo through the latter half of the mix, psytrance and breaks are blended effortlessly with rave-ready electro. Hold out to the final track for a tasty edit!

Having already led some important discussions on how to facilitate safer spaces, as Rat Party develops as a collective and club night, GAB is looking forward to working with this family on some events very soon! 

A huge thank you goes out to the legend Ian Munro for coming through with another sleek design.

MATHESON is a name that is becoming synonymous with quality dance music. Everything the emerging, Belfast based producer touches seems to turn to gold; honing in on an aesthetic that is emotional, inspired and rhythmic. 

We know what he can do with the traditional electronica template, so we were over the moon when he sent us across 'Lungo'; a track that highlights a different side to the artists influence - a 160bpm, footwork-electronica hybrid that makes for a truly blissed-out trip.

Maeve is a singer, explorer and textural artist who centres a very free and experimental jazz vocal, into her minimal, organic soundscapes. She composes, produces and writes music
around nature field recordings and stories of her exploring adventures in extreme environments. She is currently working on her first release.

‘Dj’ing allows me to play with existing music by remixing and reimagining the rhythms, melodies and chords of each track. It forces me to use my ears in a completely new and challenging way. It’s almost like a collaboration with each artist behind each track, and I love it.’  

She is a Sisu core DJ and a core active member of Wxmb 2 a non-profit ever growing community of womxn connecting and coming together with a shared mission: to take on inequality within the music industry - organising festivals, workshops and events around this theme.

‘In My Mind’ champions that iconic piano-rave sound. Bingo Wode combines familiar rave sounds, breakbeat drum patterns, yearning vocals and an electric synthline. The piano melody adds to the raw, ravey energy rounding off the track with a twinkling groove. Brimful of emotion, the track’s progression tugs on the heartstrings. The euphoric crescendo being one of those that would definitely make you tearful in the middle of the dancefloor.

Extra Spicy’s third various artist's compilation, XTR003, is an all-Australian affair. This nine-track release features some of our favourite local producers and covers the full spectrum of bass music, from classic purist flavours to mutant genre cross-pollinations. 

Heavy, chopped-up breaks and massive bass stabs pervade 99 Nissan Patrol’s Ruffla, Mashup from Akul, and label owner Mincy’s Gnome Home. 

Fans of more stripped-down flavours will want to make a beeline for the UKG nostalgia of Why Didn’t You Mention It? by Myledo and Krypsis’ dark garage groove LoFi Rider. 

The final portion of the compilation raises the tempo. DJ SUNROOF gives a respectful nod to the past on Break The Mold, a jungle banger chock full of mangled breakbeats. 

Hardcore energy is merged with chaotic footwork sample manipulation and ghetto tech attitude on Say My Name from Floor Twenty, while UNKLE SYD channels 1992 warehouse energy on Sydtopia. End User License Agreement rounds out proceedings with a heady, dubwise roller that focuses on spacious echoes and big sub-bass. 

XTR003 proves that you don’t need to look beyond Australia’s backyard for big talent.

James Kirkpatrick has been DJ’ing across Belfast since 2007 and is a stalwart of the illegal rave scene in Northern Ireland. Playing at Sunflower Fest, Shine, Aether and Echo, The Pavilion, Love and Death, Skyliner, The Parlour, The Front Page, Bogans, and headlining at The Stiff Kitten, he has notably brought quality techno to the fore in NI by forming Delta-9 events.

Founded in January 2011, Delta-9 is notorious for its incredible sound systems and iconic underground raves. Considered the home of techno in Belfast, Delta-9 promises nothing but the best in “Jackin House and Techno” culture.
