A Hand in the Bush

James' music has been commissioned for a many ensembles and performers, including the choir of Westminster Abbey, Graham Johnson and the Songmakers’ Almanac, Guy Bovet, James Bowman, and the Bromley Boy Singers. He collaborated on the song cycle Voices of London for Song in the City and his work has been performed by English Voices, Vivamus, the choirs of St Paul’s Cathedral and Trinity College Cambridge, with recordings by the choirs of Girton and Selwyn College. Musical theatre writing includes Infants, Miracles at Short Notice and the award-winning Tony Blair the Musical. He wrote and directed the music for Io Theatre Company's actor-musician adaptations of A Christmas Carol and The Snow Spider, their realisation of J. M. Barrie’s A Well Remembered Voice and their forthcoming production The Confessions of Fanny Cradock. Other theatre music includes Lysistrata for Watford Palace Theatre and a collaboration with Andrew Motion for Bush Theatre’s Sixty-Six Books. Short film scores include Death Sentence, The Ghost of Kirkton Fell and Savage Mountain. Theatre music includes new musicals Miracles at Short Notice (“a sophisticated treat” – MusicalTalk) and award-winning Fringe sell-out Tony Blair – the Musical (“runs the melodic gamut from near-Weillian severity to knowingly schmaltzy balladry, and is packed with rich, tight harmonies” – The Daily Telegraph) and scores for Io Theatre Company's A Christmas Carol, Dickens' Ghosts and The Snow Spider, Dreamshed Theatre’s The Borrowers, Watford Palace Theatre's Lysistrata, and a setting of new words by Andrew Motion for Bush Theatre’s Sixty-Six Books at Westminster Abbey; short film scores include Death Sentence and Savage Mountain.
