Here and now, once again, I am talking about my very own music, on my very own platform. It’s a bit difficult to do that, I’ll admit. I don’t want to come off as overly zealous, stuffing my output through a “campaign machine”. But then I think of all the artists who run their own labels [many of you on here, yes?], and who are going through the same slight dilemma of writing a press release, outlining their bio in the third person. So no bio on here – I think that you know who I am [at least through my words]. Instead, I will tell you a little about this title track, which is taken from my upcoming album, When You Are, due out on July 1st via the amazing Slowcraft Records. Having explored the concepts of time through my music on my last release, Out of Time (Injazero, 2021), I wanted to move on past that dimension. And whereby I previously questioned the possibility of departing time and existing without it, in “When You Are” I am abandoning time altogether, on a journey outside of this predicament, measured in an irreversible sequence of events. This may be a frightening proposition, sometimes glimpsed by an experienced meditator. In this timeless passage, I explore the possibilities of being outside being, and in the absence of elsewhere finding ourselves, whenever we are. I’m obviously very excited about this one, folks, and I hope that you enjoy it. Feel free to reach out and tell me what you think!

Hajú is an old Moravian word that loosely translates to “hush hush”.

With the lead single and title track from his upcoming album on Slowcraft, Tomáš' weaves together acoustic elements, soft synthetic manoeuvres and evocative field recordings to spellbinding effect.

Assisted by Pavel Rajmic on strings and Marie Puttnerová on vocals the Czech composer and field recordist has perfectly captured the spirit of both his homeland and the season.

Well, now... Headphone Commute's Best of the Year feature for 2024 is all done and dusted (I hope you enjoyed this instalment and your wallet is not too sore). I spent the last two weeks unplugging from the world (even as the events around the world seemed to spin out of control), reflecting on the future direction of this platform and the next steps that I intend to take to improve upon our collective sonic journey guided by these honest words on honest music. And fear not, the authentic curation of HC-delivered content that you have hopefully grown accustomed to is here to stay, even as I branch off in a slight detour (more on that later). Meanwhile, to stay true to my words and to prove the above point, I'm excited to share with you this exclusive track premiere by a Stockholm duo of Johan Kisro and Petter Lindhagen, recording under the project name Dött ljus for the always-excellent London-based Slowcraft Records. The music embraces playful experimentation, crossing numerous genres while pairing the album's vibrant energy with soft, moody undertones. This careful balance creates a richly layered voyage, blending sounds in ways that tantalize the brainwaves in just the right way, shaking off the winter clouds and pulling the listener into a warm blanket of sincerity. I think it's fair to say that if it wasn't for James Murray's keen ear for the careful curation of his genre-spanning imprint, I would have never come upon this tender album, and that's precisely the type of connection with the label owners (who put their time and energy into every single release) and artists behind the music that I seek. About a month ago, I launched and announced Headphone Community – a special place where independent artists can connect with their supporters in an intimately curated space. The first and currently featured artist is James Murray, whose music I have been covering for over a decade now. We’re only halfway through the month, and so far, I have already published an exclusive track premiere [unavailable anywhere else], an interview with Murray [he’s usually very reserved about sharing his process and technique], and a shout-out to his imprint Slowcraft [including a 50% off discount code to anything in the label’s catalogue, exclusive to the members]. But there is another thing that has been happening behind the scenes. As I began to highlight this artist and spend more time with his sound throughout the month, I started to truly connect with his music on a level much deeper than ever before. Yes, I have already lauded his 2022 album, Careful Now, as one of the best of that year, but as I listened to it again and again and again, it started to open up beyond its sonic medium. It became more than just music – a conversation between a composer and a listener, and suddenly… I really heard. This active and heightened experience of listening reminded me of the very early days of discovering the beauty of music – when I used to nestle with an album for months and years at a time. In the last greatly accelerating decades of social media, algorithms, and time-sliced attention spans, I feel like I’ve been robbed of that. And now, I’m bringing it all back. 

Today’s track premiere is from Murray’s upcoming EP, Clearings, scheduled to be released via Home Normal in April. It’s an alternative mix of one of the pieces from Careful Now, showcasing the evolution of the track with an intimate glimpse into its transition and the final shape.
