In Étude Concrète, we have attempted to evoke an aural soundscape of Somerville past and present, incorporating elements of narrative, ‘real-world’ noises, and more abstract, stylised sounds. The source materials were captured around and near College and taken from archive sources, then treated and the piece realised in a surround-sound format at NOVARS, the electroacoustic music studios of the University of Manchester.

 

Somerville’s past and heritage in women’s higher education is represented by the voice of alumna Vera Brittain, speaking in a BBC radio broadcast of 1937. The other treated and untreated clips of speech are of current students and the Principal, and ‘the voice’ is also present in the sound of Somerville’s chapel choir. In the piece, voices act in counterpoint to the environmental sounds of College, which in some cases receive treatment such that their origin is obscured and the inherent ‘musical’ qualities of the sounds precede their semantic connections.

 

Athena Corcoran-Tadd and David Hughes are Music Finalists at Somerville. James Percival is a Somerville graduand (2010) currently reading for the Musicology MusM at the University of Manchester. All three studied composition with Martin Suckling, and have had their music ‘workshopped’ and performed by, amongst others, the BBC Singers, pianist Joanna MacGregor, The Heath Quartet and composer Trevor Wishart.
