These miniatures are inspired by performance anxiety (and a chapter of that name by Glenn D. Wilson and David Roland in The Developing Musician). Performed attacca, they explore various emotional states and physical ailments a performer may suffer from while making a public address of sorts.

The piece was written for a concert focusing on Britten’s 'Temporal Variations' (1936). While the harmonic language is founded on Britten’s, this piece is informed more by the cynical mood of this work, particularly its distorted dance forms (‘Waltz’, ‘Polka’) with their subversions of patterns that defeat expectations, and its political undertones (‘March’, ‘Exercises’, ‘Commination’) which perhaps do not warrant a ‘Resolution’, instead suggesting an acutely vexed despondency.

Ten Erratic Miniatures (2013) for oboe and piano

Commissioned by the Late Music Concert Series.

The material for this piece is derived from turning the height elevation of the three stages of the 2014 Tour de France into pitch contours. The piece is a structured improvisation that was devised with the players, who read off an individual pitch contour and a score wheel map of the structure (with sections labelled York, Harrogate, Hebden Bridge...). There are 3 stages, nicknamed: freewheeling, uphill struggle, and revolutions. 

The winds and strings are in teams. The bass guitar coaches the strings, who aim to make lyrical sense of the pitch contours together. Though it starts well, rivalry causes them to lose focus and get stuck.

The winds don’t have a coach, as they have trained to treat the contour exactly as chromatic scales tracing the peaks and troughs. They eventually get penalised for an increasingly erratic performance. Whether there is a clear winner is up to you.
