This piece is based on one of my shifts at work.The piece starts with a door shutting and a song on the radio coming on. This song would usually be playing as I get into work and check to see how many people we have in that day. A section of the song has been reversed as I always read the list wrong and go back up it. When I enter the kitchen the percussion section which is just a knife chopping, a plate being placed on a metal service and a steak sizzling on the grill cut into sections to make a beat. Then I go into the washing up room (the percussion continues but the volume is lowered) and turn the taps on which make a horrendous squealing sound. Then the percussion drops out completely as I’m not focusing on the kitchen any more; I start washing up. I stand in between the kitchen and the washing up room and hear talking, the radio and the bin lid. Some of the dialogue is repeated because  during a shift at work people repeat their selves so many times and I wanted to capture that in the track. The bubbling at the end is oil which is to represent my patience getting close to the end. I leave the kitchen and walk through the bar where the song is playing again and close the door behind me.

The idea for this piece originates from my holiday in Italy where there was a huge storm very late at night. In this piece I am trying to re-create the sounds of that storm with a prepared guitar. My prepared guitar is an electric guitar that will have it's timbre changed by placing different objects in the strings and using unusual ways to play it. This is sometimes known as table top guitar as most prepared guitarists will play the guitar with it placed on the table. I have recorded the sounds and used effects on software such as ‘Guitar Rig’ inside Cubase to modulate the sound and make it sound completely different and I will be using objects such as a hammer, pieces of metal, rubber bands, a light bulb, cards, keys and other house hold object to make the sounds. I have also played around the jack lead whilst recording as it gives a frequency that is unique every time that the guitar cannot play.

La Tempête

The emotion behind my minimalist piece is chilled ambience. This feeling is a chilled out but also slightly unnerving one. I have attempted this by holding down two ‘C’ notes on a string ensemble to make an octave, which carries on throughout the whole 5 minutes and 11 seconds of the piece.
