Shepley’s Tom Chadwick joined us on the podcast this week to share with us his big successes over his career. All-rounder Tom reflected on his formative years in the humble surroundings of Cartworth Moor where he actually began life behind the stumps before growing to be one of the Huddersfield Cricket League’s leading all-rounders. His move to Scholes in 2013 saw him play some of his best cricket with over 3,000 runs and 150 wickets to his name in five successful years where he was involved in winning the three major domestic trophies; T20 Trophy, Sykes Cup and Byrom Shield.

Tom also explained why in 2019 he made the move to his current club; Shepley, where success continued as the Marsh Lane team lifted the Heavy Woollen Cup in his first season. 2021 hasn’t started brilliantly for the Rams with three defeats from three at the time of recording the podcast, but Tom gave us the lowdown on new Pakistani overseas cricketer Numan Akbar as Shepley look to arrest the bad start and turn things around post-haste. Many thanks to Tom for giving up his time for us.

In ‘The Opener’ many fond memories were shared with Tom and our other main contributors Steve Whitwam and Andrew Crawshaw including an incredible Scholes v Townville match, an unusual replacement of the bails in a White Rose game and why map-measuring tools were required to allow admittance for one team into the Heavy Woollen Cup.

Finally, the chaps ran their eye over the weekly matchday review where Mirfield Parish Cavaliers may have pulled off the shock of the season already and host Jamie actually forgot what match he was at!

Episode 5 - Guest: Tom Chadwick & Matchday 2 Reviews

We enjoyed the company of Clayton West captain Alex Clegg on this week’s Castle Hill Cricket League podcast (episode 6). Alex is also a wicketkeeper and has risen through the ranks, starting as a junior before ending up as one of the most influential players at the club; the first team skipper. As wicketkeeper he’s accounted for over 150 victims since 2012 and just recently chalked up his biggest first team score with a 144 opening the batting at home to Shelley.

The regular contributors Andrew Crawshaw and Steve Whitwam also divulged the keepers who they’ve considered the best in the league over the years for ‘The Opener’ and the listeners sent in plenty of suggestions themselves.

We also had a packed cricketing schedule to unpack and review as Thongsbridge nipped clear at the top in these early stages and Hoylandswaine emphatically shrugged off the defeat which saw plenty of talking points last week and Alex gave us his opinions on Clayton West’s defeat at Rastrick and the start to the season that his team have made.
