A2 String Exercise

All my life I have had dysgraphia, a neurological condition that affects the brain’s ability to carry out tasks requiring the use of fine motor skills. Its most notable and visible symptom is the effect it has on written expression. I was not diagnosed with the condition until after I had finished school. The later years of school were a particularly difficult and stressful time for me, especially as I received no support for the condition I had no idea I had. 

Simple things such as tying shoelaces, organisation, and writing, especially in the case of written notation, are often more physically taxing for Dysgraphics. When writing on manuscript paper I all too often find the note I have written is a note lower or higher than the one I intended to write due the condition’s tendency to result in slanted and disfigured handwriting.

This piece aims to capture the stress, and often sadness the condition, and the lack of attention thereto, caused. Tempo markings are comments that were regularly made by teachers at parents’ evenings and parent-teacher meetings before I was diagnosed, and comments made by myself afterward. This piece features performance directions such as flexing wrists; something I did regularly in exams when my hand started to hurt.

Formation of Melody:
While undiagnosed, and completely unaware of having any condition I received no regular educational support for dysgraphia. I therefore had far less control over my organisation, academic progress, and as a result; self-esteem, than many of my peers. To reflect this lack of control in the formation of my melody, I have employed a system of composition that dictates notes itself. By running an A natural minor scale alongside the alphabet, notes correspond to letters of the alphabet as the scale recurs. The melodies are formed of my name (withheld here for the sake of anonymity) & condition, the word ‘undiagnosed’ and the phrase ‘bumbling fool’; a phrase a former teacher used to describe my mannerisms when speaking in class.
