"Baikal Jew's Harp Orchestra" was born at Baikal jew's harp camp at August 2012 when we realized that it might be interesting to play big harp band with conductor. Now we have the Orchestra members not only in Irkutsk, Russia, but other places. We play improvisations as well as folk harp tunes. Fangjes is an ancient Norwegian jew’s harp tune created in the beginning of XVIII century.  We play this tune and then some variations on the main theme. So this work is the authors view to the traditional tune.

В коллективе участвуют не только исполнители из Иркутска, но и из других городов. Мы играем как разученные композиции, так и импровизации.

Fangjen by Baikal Jew's Harp Orchestra

As a young boy already, Jan Marmenout was drawn to the sounds in nature and the sounds of ethnic musical instruments. He left his  home town at the age of 19 and started travelling to Southern and Eastern Europe where he spent some time with Gypsy families (Spain and Romania). As his interest in old traditional culture grew stronger, he left modern Europe and went to Morroco, where he stayed one year and a half, mostly with the nomad Berber people up in the middle Atlas mountains. Afterwards, he travelled to South America, where he also spent a year. Jan started his career as a percussionist, playing in different world music bands. Later he discovered and started playing the berimbau, the didjeridoo, shawn's, Tibetan trumpets, conch-shells, the jew's harp, Volcanic stones(litophones) and some flutes: the Fujara, lira, the native american flute, and some other Balkan (kaval) and Arabian flutes..." 

"I never thought I would play some of these more melodic instruments, but I believe now it was a natural evolution. As a young boy already, hitting the skin of my drums, I always  heard voices, flutes and other sounds, and these were very often connected with form, colour and images. Only much later it became clear to me that the "overtones" (harmonics) produced by the repetitive drumming were creating all these fascinating melodic rhythm patterns. It was the deep vibrating sound of the drum that made me see, feel and hear all this at the same time. I realised then that everything in this ever unfolding universe is deeply connected. "Sound" is something very mysterious and powerful and all these at "First Sight" quite different musical instruments, producing different sounds and coming from all parts of the world, are somehow mysteriously linked together."
