Next up in the Field Manuevers takeover is Dalston Superstore resident J.Aira who late last year released their debut single, ‘TPL’, on the club’s in-house label. Through their work as a vocalist, composer and DJ, they showcase a passion for unearthing lost queer histories and bringing them to life whether that’s through radio documentaries and soundtracking for Stonewall 2069. Growing up, J.Aria found themselves fixated on voices such as Sarah Vaughan, Diana Ross, Judy Garland and Whitney to name a few and cite Sylvester, Arthur Russell, Patrick Cowley, Anthony and The Johnson’s as influences too. 

‘This mix was recorded in Brooklyn NYC in August ’22. When I play I’m building the extended narrative of a ki, with twists that encompass diverse sounds and the journey of the dancefloor. Sultry and percussive, deep and acidic, with high emotion and tears. "Energy wise I was just going for something high energy and fun! I had some higher tempo high energy tracks that I wanted to try mixing together and this mix was the end product of that. Had the privilage to play in the National Concert Hall in October 2022. The gig meant a lot to me on loads of levels. To play in such a setting, to a room of dedicated electronic musics fans who were there to listen, gave me such a sense of belief. Far too often, the only avenue that Irish artists can follow to find that sort of recognition is to emigrate and express themselves in other places. To be able to do it in my hometown was really moving!

I've also been involved in a campaign called Give Us the Night for the past 5 years. We've been trying to improve the conditions for late night cultural spaces with a particular emphasis on dancefloors. We've been working hard to open up National Cultural Institutions for these type of alternative cultural events. So to see people dancing in the NCH til 3am was a pure buzz. Here's the recording of the music from the night, hope you enjoy.

DJ Autumn (@autumn-bpr) plays various pivotal roles in the UK dance music scene. Firstly, he is label manager at Banoffee Pies Records. It's a buy on sight imprint and network of various sub-labels such as Otaku, Beats, Limited Series and the ambient Sonder Series that plots an always tasteful path between broken beat, garage and minimal clubs sounds from cutting edge artists. Those sounds also characterise his own DJ sets and radio shows everywhere from Worldwide FM to NTS to the BBC. From high tempo intensity to tripped out atmospherics,  he's an ever present vibesman who also founded his own Headroom Festival in 2019.

His mix for us this week is a stripped back and dubbed out winter warmer. Always oozing a sense of cool and control, it builds through the most cavernous of bass spaces and icy sci-fi sonics towards a skeletal jungle workout that gets you on your toes. The sounds are always rich and soulful so pull you deep into a comforting musical world. And we can all make time for that right now.
