Iron Shoes Composer and Music Director Janet Kutulas has been performing with and creating music for Kitka for 28 years. She is also currently the director of Zele: The Kitka Community Chorus. A graduate of the SF Conservatory, Janet was an award-winning classical flutist who performed regularly with some of the finest orchestras and chamber ensembles in the San Francisco and Chicago metro areas. She was also a founding member of the Bay Area new music ensemble Earplay. She joined Kitka in 1988 after a cycling accident left her with two broken hands. Janet has served on the vocal music faculties of Mills College and the CA Jazz Conservatory and her compositional work has been supported by the NEA, the MAP Fund, The Creative Work Fund, The East Bay Fund for Artists, The Kenneth Rainin Foundation and New Music USA.
