…designed as an installation work while examining notions of autonomy, freedom and community building during the pandemic, I began to look at the concept of personal utopias. Personal utopias are essential means through which we formulate alternatives to inefficiency and find solutions to problems. COVID-19 and the many, multi-layered movements currently taking shape offer a bold reminder of the impact of our lifestyles and inter-connectiveness.

In "I Am Woman," Emmy Meli challenges fixed labels about what it means to be a woman by stating: "I am feminine, I am masculine, I am anything I want." The artist makes it clear that she is not limited to characteristics traditionally associated with the feminine or masculine, defending the freedom to be multiple. This approach reflects Emmy's personal inspiration, transforming her daily self-esteem mantras into verses that celebrate authenticity and freedom of choice.
