In ‘The Birds In The Backyard Tell Me When The Sun Rises’ five field recordings, made during van der Putten's daily vocal training at sunrise, are superimposed. This creates a (dis)harmonic sound field. 

The premiere was at Handmade Homegrown 8, on 18 April 2013, in a concert serie curated by Kate Moore in Theater Dakota, The Hague (NL). 

It was also presented in installation 'All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE' in June 2013 during the Master Artistic Research graduation exhibition 'Map Play Narrate' at the Royal Gallery of the Royal Art Academy in The Hague.

The Birds In The Backyard Tell Me When The Sun Rises, 2013

A composition that creates time and space for contemplation and which is inspired by time spend on the little beach of Het Stenen Hoofd, a wasteland located at the Westerdoksdijk in Amsterdam (NL). Field recordings made on the site are mimicked, filtering the sonic landscape through the voice. It becomes a theatre, as much as this specific place which only looks like a wasteland. This project was part of 'Recreation Ground', presented on 5 September 2013 in W139 in Amsterdam and made possible by the Wasteland Twinning Network and ECF. On 7 September the piece could be heard on headphones at the site itself, which gave an interplay of live and recorded sounds.

This track is a fragment of the composition 'becoming-storm' (12" LP, label Aloardi). It is part of research project 'Invisible Architecture' wherein Janneke van der Putten & Christian Galarreta share their interest in the physical sound properties that could emerge in a space. In this first work, the acoustic reflections in a light tower are explored through its surrounding sounds and subtle acoustic phenomena, and with the human voice. Resonant frequencies and reverberations are emphasized and prolonged with voice-echo interactions and unconventional microphone techniques. In the compositions, as well as during the live performance, van der Putten & Galarreta aim at making the acoustic reflections audible, more than the direct source that generates them. The tone modulations, the breathing voice rhythm, and the position and type of microphones used, are a response to the qualities of the chosen site. This makes hidden acoustics appear.

Composition 'Becoming-Siren' is released on LP by label Aloardi (PE). In some of his sonic compositions and live performances, Galarreta researched the filtering of sound through the physical structure of some spaces (concept that he develops in his "HiperOido" project). 'My Voice Got Up At'

A growing sound piece temporarily fixed in the exhibition consisting of a sound track played back in a loop, of a series of field recordings made between November 2012 and January 2015. Here the artist says the clock time, being in the early morning and the first moment that the voice sounds on that day. 

This way of documenting one moment is incorporated in the dynamics of daily life, with its fluctuating rhythms and irregularities. ‘My Voice Got Up At’ does not mirror a chronological account of registered moments, but is imbedded in a vertical concept of time. All the recorded fragments relate to the same situation: the moment just before the artist starts her singing training.

This sound piece is part of long-term project ‘All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE’, which engages in different notions of time experience, such as clock time, cyclic time of the earth and sun, body time and experiential time. Through documenting the artist studio practice and vocal training, the project encompasses different works and perspectives on the theme, from which ‘My Voice Got Up At’ is one of them.

'Wachstumspulse' (transl: 'Growth Pulses') is a music performance by Wolfram Oettl, Janneke van der Putten, and Richard Spaeth. This video is a fragment of a rehearsal recorded in Die Datscha, Germany, August 2025.

'Wachstumspulse' ('Growth Pulses') – for keyboard, bowed Lute, voice, and space, is a contemporary music project inspired by minimal and ambient music. With their improvisational approach, the three musicians develop a soundscape that grows and dissolves in a slow, constant, and unpredictable transformation. Janneke van der Putten sets accents in a relaxed, timeless atmosphere with various facets of her voice and performative movements in the space. The sound layers of Richard Spaeth's string lute, and the changing rhythms and harmonies of keyboardist Wolfram Oettl create bright, shimmering and darkened moods, both familiar and unheard, in a rich sonic unfolding.
