The name of the the podcast “Night Walk Radio” really inspired me. It made me imagine someone listening to the radio alone in the middle of the night with the main lights dimmed, maybe working on something or just chilling. That in turn led me to think: “Alright, if I was in that situation, what would I like my listening experience to be like? Maybe something that really takes me on a trip through many different sonic places.”

Therefore, for this mix, I decided to not only mix tracks, but to also mix many elements of who I am as a musician and dj...

JAN PIENKOWSKI is what you can really call an all-round musician. No matter what you can do in the music industry, he´s been there … spinning vinyls, playing live, teaching music production, running various labels (ONO records, ONOMAR and ONOBOTS), creating sounds for video games, collaborating with visual artists, organizing events … and probably a lot more stuff that he just forgot to mention. 

You can really hear his deep affection for house, techno, dub, world, classical and jazz. An affection that brings a diverse palette of textures, grooves and acoustic spaces into every mix.

His versatility and ambition behind the decks convert BOUWCAST #005 into an excellent interpretation of house music. Big shout out to our man in Canada, it´s great to have you on board!!

First released on CKUT 90.3 FM's Modular Systems FM compilation in 2004, Magog finally finds its way to the ONO Records family. Magog is an Eastern Townships city in Quebec, Canada, situated on the border of Lake Memphremagog - a lake where I spent many of my summers. During my visits, I made a series of recordings that have made their way into some of my productions. Magog in particular features processed recordings of waves hitting my favourite dock on the lake (at the foot of Owl's Head), Nord Modular bass and beats, and some chopped up guitar work to lead the proceedings.

In the Dreamtime, the Creator made three different types of animals. First, he created Mammals. He told them that they were to live on the land and he gave them fur to keep them warm. Then he created Birds and told them that their place was in the sky. He gave them wings so they could fly and he gave the mother birds the ability to reproduce by laying eggs. Next, he created Fish. He told the Fish they were to dwell in the water and he gave them gills to help them breathe and fins to help them swim.

When the Creator had finished, he found there were a lot of bits and pieces left over from making these three types of animals. So he joined these bits and pieces together and created Platypus. Platypus is certainly like no other creature on Earth. It has fur like a Mammal, can lay eggs like a Bird and swim underwater like a Fish.

At first the Mammals, the Birds and the Fish all lived in harmony together. However, as time went by they began to quarrel. Each group thought it was the most important.

The Mammals held a meeting. Big Bagaray the Kangaroo hit the ground with his tail and shouted. “We Mammals are the greatest! We are special because only we have fur."

"Yes, but what about Platypus?” said his wife. “He has fur."

The Mammals thought about this. They decided to visit Platypus and ask him if he would join their group and help them in their fight against the Birds and the Fish.

Platypus listened very carefully to the Mammals and replied, "Thank you very much for asking me to be a part of your family. I will think about it and get back to you with my decision."

Around the same time, the Birds held a meeting as well. Bungil the Eagle spread his wings and shouted "We Birds are the greatest! We are special because only we can fly and lay eggs.”

“Yes, but what about Mrs. Platypus?” said his wife. “She lays eggs."

The Birds thought about this. They decided to visit Platypus and ask him if he would join their group and help them in their fight against the Mammals and the Fish.

Platypus listened very carefully to the Birds and replied, "Thank you very much for asking me to be a part of your family. I will think about it and get back to you with my decision."

Meanwhile, the Fish also held a meeting. Goodoo the Murray Cod leapt out of the water, landed with a big splash and shouted. "We Fish are the greatest! We are special because only we can swim under water."

"Yes, but what about Platypus?” said his wife. “He spends most of his time under water.”

The Fish thought about this. They decided to visit Platypus and ask him if he would join their group and help them in their fight against the Mammals and the Birds.

Platypus listened very carefully to the Fish and replied, ""Thank you very much for asking me to be a part of your family. I will think about it and get back to you with my decision."

Platypus thought about what he should do for a long time. Eventually, the animals got tired of waiting for him to make up his mind and they gathered outside his home on the bank of the billabong. Each group shouting over the other that Platypus should join their special group.

At last, after the sun went down and the evening air began to cool, Platypus came out and climbed up onto a log. All the animals fell silent.

“I have given each of your offers a great deal of consideration and I have made up my mind,” Platypus said. “I am a part of each of you and, therefore, a part of all of you. That is how I want things to remain. So I thank you very much for asking me, but I have decided not to join any group."

The animals didn’t like this at all. They began to argue.

So Platypus went on, "Please! Please! Let me explain. When the Creator first made us, he made each of us different. So in that sense, each of us, in our own way, is special. But special doesn’t mean better. None of us is better or worse than their neighbour - only different. So we should respect each other’s differences and live together without fighting.”

Griffintown Records is the new identity of long standing House music label Mile End Records, which has featured music from artists including Moscoman, Darius Syrossian, Lee Walker, Cera Alba, Raffa FL and Hector Couto.

This new release is from Griffintown Records favourite artist and US legend Roy Davis Jr. who returns to the label to appear on his eighth release.

To many a fan of House music Roy Davis Jr. is an artist who needs little introduction with a career that spans over two decades and includes releases on labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Large Records, Peacefrog Records, Rebirth and Classic.

Recently his track “Gabriel” originally released in 1996 was repressed, and already an anthem, found its way to being a top selling record of 2015. Roy Davis Jr.’s ability to write timeless records is a skill many admire and his skills behind the decks see him regularly playing international DJ sets in all four corners of the globe.

The release also features the vocals of Terry Dexter, who was first introduced to the world in 2005 by Patti LaBelle on the Tonight Show. Both a singer and actress, Terry Dexter is an influential artist who along with a chart topping solo album, has sung with Simply Red and at the Baseball World Series. Now an American icon that has performed alongside Wynonna Judd, Michael McDonald and Eric Benét, her vocals on this release are nothing less than stunning.

Also featuring are two remix versions of the original single track titled “Just A Little Bit Of Love” that are provided by Emmaculate plus Jan Pienkowski & Fadel.

Jan Pienkowski is a Canadian artist who has previously featured on Monsieur Musique, and for his callaborative remix he joins forces with Fadel, who along with previous releases on Griffintown Records has also featured music on Get Physical and Toolroom. 

Providing the second rework is a solo remix from Emmaculate who amongst other achievements has previously released on Aid to the SouLLess.

The original mix of “Just A Little Bit Of Love” is jacking house with shuffling two step hi-hats and a powerful vocal full of soul. Uplifting stabs and bass squelches provide energy to the bumping groove of this straight up dancefloor anthem with a subtle UK Garage influence.

Track two is the Jan Pienkowski & Fadel remix, which is a stripped back version of the original with the addition of some bassline funk. With the original's lead stabs cut back the vocal is given space to cut through the mix, and the track becomes deep and chic with the addition of some tribal percussion.

Finishing the release is the second remix, this time from Emmaculate who takes the track down an experimental route. Adding brash live percussion and some jazz infused synths this raw remix with just a touch of acid is wonderfully quirky and perfect for those looking for something a little different.

Owner of ONO Records and sub labels ONOMAR and ONOBOTS, Jan Pienkowski loves to create and share his unique blend of music and sounds. His music, electroacoustic and physics training and deep affection for house, techno, dub, world, classical and jazz bring a diverse palette of textures, grooves and acoustic spaces. Back home in Montreal, Jan DJs in the best clubs the city has to offer (SAT, Salon Daomé, Stereo Bar, Laika, Peopl/UN, Kanalbar) as well as making festival appearances for Mutek, Elektra, Black & Blue, MEG, Divers/Cité, Nuit Blanche. He has been a resident artist at the Société des arts technologiques [SAT] (one of the most unique digital art spaces in the world) for over ten years, producing and performing DJ/VJ/LIVE events and interdisciplinary immersive live shows as well as developing and teaching music production courses. 

Jan's constant quest for pushing the boundaries of electronic music and live performance has given him the chance of collaborating with the Opera of Montreal, to be the music and sound composer for the film RE-GENERATION commissioned for the UN COP21 Conference on Climate Change in Paris, the music director and performer in DOMAGAYA - an encounter of Aboriginal Cultures and Digital Arts for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada during the 400th anniversary of Quebec City, as well as to be chosen by the British Council as the Canadian Representative for the Cultural Leadership International (CLI) initiative.
