It's safe to say that it's not often a label, platform and thriving talent hotspot like Pick 'n' Mix comes along. It's a special place, both for those involved and for us on the outside who witness their influence on a musical, cultural and societal scale. In fact, to just refer to PnM as a label is a complete understatement; this phenomenon is much, much bigger and influential than that. Step-by-step, they are quickly progressing and transforming into one of the most critically important platforms in Drum & Bass, taking all its connecting facets and stratas in their stride. Spearheaded by head-honcho, label boss, proficient selector and all-round tastemaker TJ Campbell, PnM have been championing the most promising 174 talent for almost 2 years now, linking up with scores of now-essential producers, among them the likes of Vital, Sota, Hexa, Kontakt, Master Error, Parallel and GAW.

But, as we mentioned, the team at PnM pride themselves as something more than a label; they’re an incredibly diverse, socially-aware team of ultra-talented creatives, working from the ground up to make the scene around them a better place, creating a space that is accepting of every individual - TJ has become a voice for those that need it, and that has to be commended. One of the outcomes of this is PnM’s next expansive project - ‘The Black Excellence LP’. Built from the ground up as an encyclopaedic compilation, this new collection shines brightly through both its content and its foundations. The LP is comprised entirely of BAME and POC creatives, taking in everything from the artists and vocalists themselves, all the way through to the album artwork (a beautiful piece of art hand-drawn by TJ’s father), the mastering (done in it’s entirety by MYKOOL), the A&R process and the promotional campaign. It’s a staggering, momentous celebration of talent, from artists that roam within the refines of Drum & Bass and beyond. The culmination of this is an emotional, pinpoint collection of meaningful, tantalising art, that will surely echo throughout this much-loved scene years after its release; a startling equilibrium of the underground sound.

We’ve been lucky enough to link up with TJ and the PnM crew for today’s exclusive premiere, an upcoming full review and also an imminent interview as part of our ‘Check The Label’ feature. Premiere-wise, we’re delighted to host the opening track from the compilation; the self-aware, on-point ‘Do The Most’ collaboration from two of the most exciting young talents about, London-based producer Lost Child and Guildford-hailing micman Kyst Cortez, who are both making serious waves right now. Flitting between Lost Child’s rolling, junglist tendencies and atmospherics and Kyst’s sparring, effervescent flows, they’ve produced a sure-fire lick of the very highest calibre.
