A Good Crescendo is Swell (2022-23) is composed for Wacom drawing tablet and Max/MSP. It can be thought of as a duet between the Wacom tablet performer and the laptop. The Max/MSP patch generates fluctuating sawtooth wave clusters, which are combined with filtered noise to form the “swells” — the namesake of the (pun-intended) title. The swells are timed and generated automatically by the patch, while the performer improvises percussive sounds on the Wacom. These percussive sounds, which are formed by combining multiple samples of everyday objects, vary based on how many fingers are touching the Wacom at any given point (1 to 10 fingers). The stereo panning is mapped to the x-axis of the Wacom, while the y-axis controls the amplitude of the percussive sounds.

This recording of A Good Crescendo is Swell is of a live performance at the 2023 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. Originally performed with a quadraphonic array, this recording has been mixed down to stereo format for streaming purposes.

A Good Crescendo is Swell (Live at NYCEMF 2023)

4 April 2018 marks 50 years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — 50 years during which, in many ways, our country has in large part recovered from the societal ills which Dr. King strove so diligently to eradicate. However, there is still work to be done. One can see evidence of this simply by turning on CNN or scrolling through one's Facebook feed. Ethnic, racial, religious, and social minorities still face prejudice and, in some cases, discrimination, where resentment, mistrust, and hatred go from mere feelings to acts of exclusion, aggression, or even violence. Using snippets from Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech, piano improvisation, and live audio processing, "Now is the Time" (2018) aims to help not only illuminate some of these lingering problems by highlighting specific issues mentioned by Dr. King, but also to remind the listener of some of Dr. King's admonitions about how to proceed with fixing these problems. While I understand that my one small voice will most assuredly have the net effect of shouting into a void, eventually, with enough void-shouters, American political leaders will hopefully muster the will to make healthy, lasting changes.

Acid Rain (a.k.a. Ujan Memedi 2.0) (2019) is part of a larger project spearheaded by Insitu Recordings, a record company in Indonesia which specializes in recording Balinese gamelan compositions. Insitu invited me and several other composers and producers to remix these recordings. The original composition I selected, Ujan Memedi by I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara, reflects on the experience of being in rain showers on a hot, sunny day.
