Day 2 of 3 - Final Fantasy XIII (68 minutes)

FF diehards (a good friend of mine included) will probably deem this blasphemous, but FF13 is my favorite FF ost, by far, hands down, no comparison. I mean:

I decided to use the baseline from the piece above and reharmonize it. Kept the strings (albeit pizz) and time signature, though (more triple!). Definitely should have been pushed the harmonizations! My piece is way too similar.

I will definitely do a reharmonization exercise again!

Day 2: Tightrope (21 Days of VGM Challenge, 2018)

Day 3 of 4 - Valkyrie Profile 2 (17 mins) - VERY little time to devote.

This game is SO serious. Probably one of the reasons it took me so long to beat it. The main battle theme is *oh so* sexy, but I decided to focus on another theme:

Many days were spent suspended on the world map, watching clouds float past to the sound of whispery piano hits.

I decided to focus on that space. The lonliness that can be felt inbetween the piano chords at around 30 seconds.

Day 5 of 6 - Kirby Dreamland 3 (20 something minutes, I don't know) 

When I think back to games with soundtracks that relatively impacted me, Kirby's Dreamland is *the first*. The soundtrack still gives me goosepumps, nearly 20 years after I originally experienced it.

A fun piece is Ripple Fields 2 - I decided to experiment with the ripple runs (and a Sega tracker) in my piece:

Day 5: Ripple Effects (21 Days of VGM Challenge, 2018)

Day 6 of 8 - Technobabylon (time frame, eh, 30 - 50 minutes)

The first game I ever composed for, that was released on steam, was The Amber Throne. Tehnobabylon was one of, if not *the*, first title I personally bought myself from steam.

SUCH A GREAT PURCHASE.

I like dark, gritty, pensive soundtracks, and Technobabylon is chock full of those tasty morsals. One of my favorites:

Day 6: Pulsating Mecha (21 Days of VGM Challenge, 2018)

Day 8 of 9 (time frame, 40 minutes)

THIS HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE COMPOSITION BY FAR. I absolutely love rhythm games. I actually have another inspiration in my 21 day list that falls in the category, but dear lord, do I love PaRappa. I never played the first, but two's soundtrack alone has my interest piqued for the original. 

There is so much freaking soul and, just, authenticity in the feel of the tracks. It's... ugh. Just so nice. You wouldn't think it came straight out of Japan.

Day 8: Bears In Gum (21 Days of VGM Challenge, 2018)

Day 10 of 11(time frame, 34 mins)

FFX back to back! Although FF8 was my favorite, I will definitely say that when it comes to recommending a FF title to newbies, ten will always be my first recommendation. I think FF8 has a special place in my heart because it was the first, but... FFX is a pretty darn good game.

The soundtrack is phenomenal. One of my favorites, which was crafted by both Nobuo and Hamauzu:

The hymn was influenced by Gregorian chant, so I decided to go the same route.

Day 10: Filtered Psalm (21 Days of VGM Challenge)

Day 11 of 12(time frame, 30 mins)

Modern indie game time! I am ashamed to say that I have never played, nor seen a let's play of, Va11 - Halla, but I have digested the mess out of the soundtrack. Garoad is most definitely a staple, and most revered, especially when it comes to hard knocking indie titles.

I decided to try and follow the same transient, drifting style. The goal was to create the synth waves in 30 minutes. Out of the 4 heard, I manipulated one from an original sine wave. I failed on that part of my goal, sadly.

Day 11: Subconscious (21 Days of VGM Challenge)

The only Star Ocean I have ever played, I would definitely say the highlight of the OST is the prog rock infusions! Sadly, the track I chose to reference doesn't hit on any of that material:

Another Sakimoto Tribute! I really freaking loved FF12. By that time I could call myself a fan and really spent time investing in the story, arcs, character development, etc. The soundtrak, as usual, is divine. SO many gems, but one that was always a favorite:

I found this theme to be beautiful and somber at the same time. A wondrous haven that quarantined its inhabitants. Cursed to either live forever isolated with your people, or forever severed while out in the real world.

I decided to take 2 instruments from Sakimoto's arrangement and attempt to create an atmosphere somewhat similar.
