Working across a variety of media John Lemke explores all things sonic through live performance, sound design and his work as a documentary film composer. The Walizka EP is his latest solo release on Denovali Records.

Three items in a suitcase, a clarinet, a looper and a microphone - is how it all started. 

A free improvisation with friend & collaborator Łukasz Bernacki (on clarinet) sparked John’s desire to bring his compositional and production approach back down to the most basic elements. Creating simple, yet distinctive rhythms only through tapping contact microphones run into noisy guitar amps became the base for the EP’s three tracks, consequently inspiring its live, lo-fi feel. Written and recorded between John’s native Berlin and his adopted home of Glasgow, Walizka (Polish for ‘suitcase’) somehow absorbs the defining atmospheres of both cities in its core.

Previously released digitally as a teaser for John’s debut album, the Walizka EP actually presents newer material, progressing the electro-acoustic nature of ‘People Do’ towards more dub drenched territories. Refining John’s blend of prepared piano and field recordings with hand crafted beats and swampy bass lines, this deeply moody and danceable release bends genres with refreshing ease.

The EP is furthermore enhanced by a second half of remixes by fellow Denovali artists Piano Interrupted, SaffronKeira and Petrels and the ever elusive Everyday Dust. Far from conventional remixes, these pieces fall more in the category of re-imaginations, complementing the EP’s first, more rhythm anchored half with a coherent ambient counterpart.

● I’ve got a new song out today called "Midnight Colors". The title reflects my primary source of inspiration – the nighttime, when the world falls silent, and I am surrounded by quietness, fully immersing myself in the creative process. This track has become a sort of sonic landscape, reflecting my emotions and memories.

The origins of "Midnight Colors" trace back to my journey in Nepal. Here, I found an oasis of positive moments and inspiration. These impressions intertwine in the music, creating a harmony of sounds filled with the energy of nature and the colors of Nepalese nights.

The idea for this composition emerged in November of last year, right after returning from the journey. However, despite the initial burst of inspiration, the completion process took time. Three months later, I returned to the project, and it turned out that time added additional depth and shades to it. I am proud of the result, and I hope that this music, infused with my inner world and inspiration, will bring you the same pleasure as it did for me.

We’re pleased to announce a new collaborative album in conjunction with Bigo & Twigetti. ‘The Exquisite Corpse’ is based on the surrealist game of the same name. Taking Leah Kardos 'Little Phase' as it's starting point, the piece will be reworked by a series of composers and producers to create an album of tracks which continually evolve as each new version is passed from one artist to another, adding to and transforming material from the original piece. We'll be releasing a new track from the album every 2-3 weeks with the first track due towards the end of October and the full album available in April 2017 so keep an eye on our social media for updates.
