Last Yellow Car by Jason Kish
It chain smokes streets like a cigarette.
Fantasy of my yellow corvette
with unlocked doors, 
cleanest floors, warm 
whisper and the 
engine roars 
to life.

Last yellow car.  Last yellow car.
 
Last car parked on a forsaken street
is “smoldering unclean” yellow, 
unnatural tone; not sunshine, 
but old bone.

A gritty noire, black and white 
picture portrays hunger.
Not alive, its engine 
cold like dirty fallen snow
that lays upon railroad
tracks below. 

And it feels like a bad movie.
I became someone strange.
I do not sleep, I barely eat, 
Inhale exhaustion from 
yellow dreams that 
scream: 

Last yellow car.  Last yellow car.  

Over concrete bridge, my 
only passage, with olive 
army jacket open. Warmest 
jacket I own, but hands are 
freezing, stumbling, my 
breath fogs the lens.  
Then a pawn shop.  100 for
the camera.  A restaurant. 
A jewelry store to ogle 
engagement rings…
all out of my league.   
Nothing I want, just want
last yellow car to unlock 
some scene:
My worn olive jacket five 
years newer. Steel toes.  
Shaved hair.
Out of the army, 
bought a last yellow car 
to get the hell 
out of here.  

No muffler, slash every break
Hit 300, invent an escape.
I hear a hostile sound.
Push the pedal down.
I push it down 
inside.

From the other side of 
a rundown building, 
I see duct tape on
the body. I wonder if
the dirty yellow car runs
like a dream or a
nightmare, and
pull the jacket
closer.

parked on this forsaken street!

 parked on this god forsaken street!
… is unclean yellow,
 	Unnatural tone.  Not sunshine, 
 	but old bone!
