          It was 89 degrees on the day I first spied a narrow pass of weeds, broken bottles, and abandoned inflatable swimming pools. 18 inches was the width of Earth that both man and land ownership had dismissed to be forever taxed and never occupied. There was a strange smell as if the air was charged by the power of a subterranean tesla coil put here by those before us. 
          I was drawn toward the comforting hum, I could feel it in my teeth.  Barely aware of the sweet stinging thistles cutting my ankles and glass crunching under bare feet; I held my hands out in front of my face. 
          My arm hair stood on end. 
          I knew an invisible doorway was approaching...I closed my eyes, held my breath and disappeared.
