A marimba, a bell, some sub-bass, a trumpet, a guitar, a record, an archive, a life. 
The Everything, Jason Forrest’s new full-length release, is packed with vitality, innovation and musical daring. This is not a bashful album, it’s not following trends, it’s arty in many aspects and it’s iconoclastic. The Everything is loud and proud, an album full of emotion from baroque melody to brutal noise. It’s symphonic, it’s clubby.  There are elements of almost every genre one can think of - from rockabilly to dupstep to eletro-acoustics. It’s an album that takes the listener on an audio tour through Forrest’s musical world.  In short- it’s everything. 

Six years in the making, The Everything is the latest achievement in a long and varied career. It’s perhaps his interest in new music, his openness to old ideas and a restless ear that has helped Forrest to keep current and to remain true to his unique place in the music world.  Beginning his career in 1999, his blend of sample heavy classic-rock meets jungle meets noise propelled Forrest rapidly to international acclaim. His 2004 album “The Unrelenting Songs Of The 1979 Post Disco Crash” was championed by Pitchfork and launched him on a non-stop international tour that continues to this day. His last album in 2005, “Shamelessly Exciting” was a personal best for Forrest and gained glowing critical reviews worldwide. 

The Everything is an ambitious record with a broad palette while at the same time remaining surprisingly cohesive. One can hear the same expressive mind at the controls over all 11 tracks. From the funk of the opening track “New Religion” to the chaotic bombast of “Archive” the musical thread leads logically (if unexpectedly) from track to track. Forrest covers a lot of ground along the way. In “Italian Lessons”, the longest track on the album, Forrest takes cues from Ennio Morricone, Crass, Kraut-rock and afro-pop ending up with something altogether unique.  The lead single for the album, “Raunchy”, is a juke-town boogie-woogie with a stomping beat interrupted by a cinematic build-up resulting in a demonic guitar solo straight from hell. “Roger Dean Landscape” is drawn similarly from a sort of Arabic Prog-rock but also fits easily at home on a late-night club music set while “Keys To The Door” feels like it’s be right at home on a late-night radio station in the smooth 70s. The album ends with one of the biggest surprises in Forrest’s career, “Isolation, Too”, an introspective meditation on what it feels like to be still, to be quiet, to be lonely.

Certainly an album of this caliber would be an obsession for an artist like Forrest, yet he remains incredibly productive. He currently runs 2 record labels – Cock Rock Disco for experimental music and Nightshifters for club sounds. He invented and designed the Star6 iPhone app, and recently he started Network Awesome, an online TV network. He’s a busy guy.

With the completion of HeavyFeet's '12x12' project (which saw them release a single every month between April 2010-March 2011), they recently decided to package some of the  additional remix versions they had done along the route, and release them as one final release to conclude this fairly epic project. 

The release features six previously unheard remixes of HeavyFeet singles from the '12x12' from Deekline, Dillon Francis, Sam Young (Plant Music), Jason Forrest (Nightshifters) and Michael McLardy. Chunky breakbeat, futuristic moombahton, bassline-driven house, haunted electronica and edgy deep house... something for everyone. Well, that is unless you like brostep, perhaps.

I'm super proud of this remix I made for one of my most favorite bands. This was for the 20 year anniversary of the awesome MERGE records, and all profits go to charity!

The result is no noise-heavy deconstruction, however; the production on the track is relatively restrained. Forrest retains the song's core structure but fills it out with tasteful electronic flourishes. The track is a clear improvement on the original version, foregrounding the anthemic quality of the Arcade Fire's music without sacrificing the earnestness that has gained them a massive following."


Arcade Fire - No Cars Go (Jason Forrest Remix)

I think most artists have some personal goals they set for themselves when creating their art. Some might strive for some technical achievement that underlay the artistic ones which might be more personally important for them. Others just want to see how far they could push something. This track, Fauvist Respoke, is perhaps my greatest achievement in sample manipulation. I had wanted this to be a 20 minute prog-opus, a la "Fragile", and while it's about half that length, you get a whole ton of ideas packed in there.

My only real regret in my carer so far is that this - my "best" track - only was available as the B-side to the Vinyl version of the "Lady Fantasy EP". And that pressing wasn't so awesome.  But hopefully by posting it here, as well as by spreading it on other sites (CRD, etc) I can give it a bit of new life....
