On June 14th, 2017 I picked up the phone at 3 in the morning to a producer telling me to get down to a block of flats in west London as there had been a terrible fire. I made my way to Grenfell Tower and could not imagine the disaster, chaos and confusion which was to come. Two years on we remember and reflect on that day and remember the people who died and those family and friends left behind.

Riverside Radio commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Balham Bomb with this special documentary. 

On October 14th 1940, a bomb landed on the road above the northern end of Balham tube station's platform tunnels, creating a large crater into which an out-of-service iconic London double decker bus crashed. During the Second World War, Balham was one of many deep tube stations people used as an air-raid shelter.

On the day of the disaster many people were sheltering inside the station and tragically nearly 70 people were killed and 70 more were injured.

Local documentary film maker Rob West who created the programme said: “As someone who uses Balham Station regularly, I've always been curious to know more about the background to the bombing of the station in 1940. What's become clear in making this documentary is how much has gone unreported, how many people still have some connection to the disaster and how many lives were affected by it."
