CONTEXT:
I loved my last mix, but this one was definitely a little harder. Some of these songs did not quite fit together the way I wanted them to. Most did, and I'm pleased with a lot of the transitions. I used more hot cues this time because there was a lot more songs to keep track of, and that was helpful. 

Overall, though, I'm still feeling pretty good about my progress. Particularly since this is a longer mix, I found myself sometimes wanting to shorten some of the songs rather than wait until the playouts to mix. But since we are where we are in this course, I mostly used outros except where I thought there could be an extended mix. 

The transition from 9 Heavens to You Are I Am was seamless, but the mix into Song for Maltan felt off to me.  Maybe looping would have helped. I almost never loop. Transition to Picon was smoother and longer. Something about the  mix to Open Up the Channel felt moody to me, not my favorite but it was smooth going into Free Your Mind. The new beat going into Midnight was ok but not perfect. 

I liked the mix into The Panther, vocals came in clean at the right time, and the transitions to Heat and to Mallificent were long and smooth. Kind of a blow your mind moment when Mallificent comes in! Moving to Sixes felt like a little bit of a vibe shift, maybe needed to drop the highs, but it worked. 

The transition to Get This Feeling was smooth and felt like relief - Felt like a real 5 Score moment. I love how Get This Feeling flows into Heaven Takes You Home into Sonder. I repeated these transitions from my last mix because I think they just work beautifully. The keys fit, the chords of Heaven blend perfectly, and the way I time the entrance to Sonder with the bells just feels good. Sonder into Wild, on the other hand, did not feel as great. Wild is an odd song, the opening is crunchy and feels like a little shift from Sonder, but I like the song in this slot in the mix because of the way it ends. The transition was quick and abrupt, but I think it worked. 

Did not really try to beat match the last three songs. I used the ambient beat-less outros and just dropped in Wild, Empowerment and Fiction where I thought they could slot, like puzzle pieces. And it worked!

CONTEXT

This is a deep/progressive house focused mix for a conscious club setting with a crowd that's already warmed up by an opening DJ. It's uptempo and high energy, starting and ending around 120 and driving to about 130 at the peak. Made this one for my PhDJ program as an assignment!

A multifaceted singer, DJ, artist, and activist, Jason has been praised by the Washington Post for his “strong, clear tenor” and for classical performances that “coupled sonorous warmth and emotional depth.” An emerging DJ and student in Tasha Blank’s PhDJ program, he is planning ecstatic dance and club performances as Rylenz, starting in 2026. (tracks and mixes coming soon ...!) 
A climate and biodiversity lawyer, Jason supports efforts to promote environmental consciousness and social change through music and has commissioned a climate themed oratorio that will premiere nationally in 2027. Based in the Washington, DC area, he can often be found practicing yoga, writing poetry, painting impressionist landscapes, mixing craft cocktails, and playing frisbee with his dog.
