The Spiveys-I Got A New Canoe 7.17

Dedicated to the teacher from Tucumán, Argentina, who was sanctioned for speaking her mind—a deeply unjust situation in a context where our president insults citizens who disagree with him by calling them "mandrills." While he dismisses those who think differently, he himself, his sister, and his officials are under investigation by Justice for corruption cases involving cryptocurrencies and bribes, which have deprived cancer patients and people with disabilities of vital medication, in addition to arbitrarily firing workers and dismantling the Argentine state to hand over our resources to foreign interests. This song is for her and for all teachers who instilled in me values of integrity, critical thinking, and love for knowledge during my studies. Thanks to all those teachers who inspired me to become a better student, poet, and person.

She was a chemistry teacher,
I still remember her, tough and sincere,
She gave me a zero on an exam,
Because she saw me cheating without shame.
And thanks to that wound to my pride,
It was a book that opened the doors for me.

She didn't swear allegiance to flags,
She went to science like wood goes to fire,
I remember her firm and just,
Hungry for truth, a complete teacher.

But these are no ordinary times,
It's a return to the seventies,
With screens that watch in secret,
With cellphones that betray the teacher.
They caught her talking about a rotten government,
And what did they expect? When not even bread is guaranteed.

They call teachers lazy,
While they teach with empty pockets,
But she was the one who paid the sentence,
With her work, with her entire life.

The matter is, she lost her job,
Because of a government of bribetakers,
Where even the shoemaker's out of work,
Where everyone behaves like a traitor.
