There's so much that I couldn't tell you even if I tried

there was too much dead air between us

every single attempt at conversation fizzled out before it could catch fire, leaving only the hollow sound of our breathing

the weight of unsaid things sat heavy between us, drowning beneath the sea of twinkling lights flickering along with the distant drone of the world below

in silence I stole a glance at them, hoping to find something—anything—in their expression that might break the silence, but their gaze was fixed on a distant point along the horizon, lost somewhere I couldn’t follow

maybe we had already said everything that mattered
maybe the silence was all that was left

they finally looked at me, their lips parting as if they might speak, but then they simply exhaled and shook their head

and just like that, I knew

our end had already arrived—we were just waiting for someone to say it out loud
