Corduroy Mavericks
Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky, Matt Mason and Rick Nielsen, better known as the Corduroy Mavericks, are quickly smashing the stereotype that the Midwest is lacking in prolific house music producers. With their quirky range of jazzy, soulful, techy, deep and funky house, New York, Chicago, the West Coast and other dance meccas have been put on notice via the sonic enthusiasm of a pair of Corduroy-loving trailblazers from the Bluegrass State.
“Music is an integral part of our lives,” Rick says. “It’s the fix in my day that keeps me focused, energized and motivated. It’s a part of me the same way that my arm or leg is a part of me. I’m that guy that that listens to electronic music all day every day with a healthy sprinkling of funk, soul, jazz, swing and rock. These are all the influences that permeate our music.” When pressed further about their musical heroes, they quickly make note of the collective of the jocks out there hustling their sound. They’re drawn to producers they feel advanced the cause and created a unique sound within the industry, including artists and DJs such as the East Coast Boogiemen, Garth, Inland Knights, Mark Farina, Masters at Work, Miguel Migs and Joey Youngman, to name just a few.
Matt & Rick began collaborating in the studio circa 2005 and the last few years have seen them really hitting their stride. In July 2009, the Chicago-based Flapjack Records released their aptly named breakout track, “Break A Dawn,” which quickly climbed the charts on go-to digital music site Stompy.com. Suddenly, the house scene was flooded with their infectious beats. Now, 6 years later, the Mavericks have racked up releases on top outlets including Dufflebag, Flapjack, Beatdown, Coyote Cuts, Juiced, Funk Mansion, Alphabet, CHFM, Native Soul, Melon Dive, Ficus Tree, Deepfunk, 6th Sense, Gourmand, Chronic Beats and Serial Sickness, with more forthcoming tracks on Flapjack, Llama Farm and Roundhouse. “Different labels like different sounds so we are glad that we can appeal to a wide variety of outlets,” Rick and Matt agree. “Since our influences come from so many different styles we try to make what moves us.”
Having played across the U.S., including Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville, Orlando, LA, San Diego, Portland (Oregon & Maine), Boston, Providence, Dallas, Denver and Phoenix, more than thirteen releases in three years and at least ten more in the works, the strong impact the Mavericks themselves have had on the house scene is clear. “I think that in any partnership, it takes time to establish roles and figure out the yin and yang of the creativity,” Rick notes. “Not only have we grown together as friends, but we have grown together as creative artists.” And their success is proof of that.

“When DJ Sneak asks you to do a mix, you go 100% or don't go at all.”  That approach is exactly why there’s a real treat in store from Chicago’s Kid Enigma who has served up a mouth-watering taste of the jacking sound cultivated in the Windy City.

The South Sider’s journey with house music started at the age of 19: “I left 3 residencies to discover the deep and dirty. Top 40, reggae, dancehall, hip hop. That was cute. It made me a lot of money. It didn't satisfy my want for more. I didn't know what more was. I heard Shades of Dank at Zentra. I had to learn how to make new records that made me feel the way I felt when I heard that. It was a bootleg, but it was a great bootleg. I remember dancing to that and feeling like the track was 7 hours long because it was so amazing to me. Money Can't Buy That Feeling.”  Kid Enigma has gone on to release music for Blue Town Records, So Sound, Plant 74, 1200 Traxx and several more fine labels.

On his Gangstercast, KE says: “I'm from Chicago, and I chose to sound as close to home as possible with each record. With records from up and coming artists from Chicago like Ed Nine and Garrett David, as well as other random artists that have sent me promos which I am ultimately grateful for, I have chosen to bang my favorite percussion, stabs and chants at the moment and put them together for this mix. I like to integrate live blending with the garnishment of delays, echoes and reverb effects to paint an audible dream of how I'm feeling at the moment, which is the most important part. The Moment.”

And he has a great viewpoint on the overall House Gangster sound which he describes: “The percussion behind the mix bangs the side of your head like a bat on a trash can, similar to the call out from one gang to another. The wave of sounds should take you up and down, like coastal winds and storms do to their boats and ships. Our chants are for the forward movement of creativity and individuality, dating back to the roots of tribal evocation.”

George JJ Flores began singing live vocals over Nic Alvarado’s (insoulwetrust.com) deejay sets in 2000, after Nic heard him sing at a local family event. Over time, he began releasing House music via HouseTribeRecords.com. Growing up in the Los Angeles Underground and Deep House Scene, George was groomed into a True House Head. Recently, he moved to San Francisco, where he was influenced to release his Fog City Ninjas EP Vol.1, with some very peculiar beats! He currently has relocated to Sacramento, where he founded Sol*Sundaze, one of Sacramento’s favorite Sunday day parties!

His vision to collaborate and bring unity through House music is something we definitely need to keep an eye on. Through this venue, George has since released 2 remixes on Diego Valle’s ListenToHouseMusic Records label and is currently working on new releases. George has been deejaying since 6th grade, singing since 4th grade and producing since 2010.

Canadian born Jason Hodges first arrived in the house music scene in late 1991, taking on Toronto's underground party scene he developed his
DJing skills on the decks with the likes of New York - New Jersey sounds. Hard-hitting beats with deep grooves became the signature
