《邊葉》一詩由香港詩人也斯於1986年創作，取自1983至1999年間完成的《蓮葉》組詩。也斯與畫家朋友重遊屯門青松觀，突然「發覺我們心中的蓮花已不再是舊日的模樣了」，於是開始創作《蓮葉》組詩，反思及探討當時香港社會現實、傳統及現代文化的交織。
 
《邊葉》描述被邊緣化的一群與權力中心之間的掙扎與吶喊。對照今日香港，此詩彷如一則悲觀（而又似乎應驗）的預言──面對圓心，在邊葉上的我們該如何自處？我們獨特的聲音在等待誰來傾聽？我們又只能默默接受被圓心漸漸改變同化嗎？詩作與音樂的交流，也是世代之間對現況的重新演繹。
 
作品由香港大學學生會合唱團委約，於2017年2月首演。

The poem The Leaf on the Edge was composed by Hong Kong poet Leung Ping Kwan (Yasi) in 1986, which was part of the Lotus Leaf series, completed between 1983 to 1999. During the poet’s visit to Ching Chung Koon (a Taoist temple in Tuen Mun) with his painter friend, he “realised the lotus flower rooted in our hearts were no longer the same as before”, which sparkled the creation of the Lotus Leaf series. The series was a reflection on the social reality that Hong Kong was then facing, and the interwoven traditional and contemporary cultures.
 
The Leaf on the Edge depicts the struggle and outcry of marginalised with the authoritative centre. Referring back to Hong Kong today, the poem almost resembles a pessimistic (yet seemingly fulfilled) prophecy. How do we survive on the leaf of the edge while facing the “centre”? How long do we have to wait till our unique voices be carefully listened? Do we noiselessly and reluctantly accept the gradual assimilation by the “centre”? The dialogue between poetry and music also brings out a reinterpretation of the status quo throughout ages and generations.
 
The piece is a commission by Hong Kong University Students’ Union Choir and is premièred by the Choir in February 2017.

邊葉 The Leaf on the Edge

Forlorn was written by Li Qingzhao, the most well-known female poet in Song Dynasty. After experiencing the fall of Northern Song Dynasty and the premature death of her husband, the poem captured the sorrow and melancholy at that stage of her life. Her earlier poems, which illustrated the youthful joy of her newlywed life, were extracted and juxtaposed in this setting, which recreated the great contrast between her joyful memory of the past and the bitter life that she was facing.

Blue is the colour of elegance, harmony, calmness; it is also a representation of melancholy and nostalgia. The complex connotations combined with the abstraction of the sky and the sea create a unique political, geographical, historical and cultural identity of a harbourfront city.

樂曲以回音及自然為意象，帶出以歌聲感動人心的信念與夢想，以及對生命和時間的熱愛與激情。

Partly inspired by Jack London's Credo, the piece reiterates the faith on the emotional power of choral voices, and the fiery passion towards life and time.

It is such a war-torn world that we are in nowadays. How do people and cities sustain their hopes under gunfires? Fireworks opens with the imagery of a sparkle in the night sky, and describes the unsettledness and powerlessness of wartime civilians, the chaotic situation created within the wars, finally the sincere and passionate hope towards peace brought by fireworks someday.

The piece was commissioned by St. Paul’s College Junior Choir, and was premiered in March 2024.
