I went in a lot of different directions at first trying to figure out how to incorporate the rhythmic field recording but finally settled on using it alongside more ambient tracks. Hopefully the source audio isn't lost or too much in the background.

This was created in Ableton Live using Slate+Ash Choreographs and ThePhonoLoop Tapes.01. The sample was modulated with Max for Live Slink Devices with added effects using Valhalla Supermassive and Baby Audio Spaced Out.

Helsinki Downspout Dream [disquiet0581]

A bit of serendipity: Saga, on the Disquiet Junto Slack, described a dream in which she saw a device that mixed radio, a voice reciting numbers-station-like strings of text, and music. 

Weirdly, I had been doing something similar in AUM, with Radio Unit; I just didn't have the numbers-station voice. So I put together a Perl script to use OS X's "say" command to generate the numbers station audio, recorded that with Audio Hijack, and pushed it over to my iPad.

I then added a file player in AUM for the numbers station data, and played around with Radio Unit, picking up various stations to do this recording.

So the Disquiet Junto assignment this week was simply to make a piece of music in 29/16 time. This is a super weird time signature. I remembered fooling about with Dilla-type beats using quintuplets (where you count 5s between every beat) and I figured exploring groups of 5 16ths might be worth it. It's a strange feeling to try and take a very mathsy approach, like fitting beats tightly on a fixed grid of 29 steps, and try to replicate some kind of "real" shuffle.

In the second half of the track I use this sample pack from Freesound. A Korean instrument that sounds like a koto. https://freesound.org/people/spt3125/packs/1534/

# Disquiet Junto Project 0693: Melody Sorted
The Assignment: Reorganize a familiar song note by note.

I initially faffed around, thinking about sorting MIDI files (may still try this!) but what really got my attention was the idea of taking "In C", doing this operation on the fragments, and seeing how that would come out.
