Born in a cloud of smoke and fur, multi-instrumentalist Devin McKnight and T-Dredz join forces to become the INDIANA PACERS in their debut collaborative release, Otis.

Known primarily as the guitarist of the seminal Boston act Grass is Green, and, more recently, Northampton, MA's Speedy Ortiz, Devin McKnight churns out riffs with fury, bending dissonance into harmony with acute results. He may be best known for pulling strings, but when he picks up the mic, it's clear that his verses have come a long way from the high school talent shows of his past. A tribute to the album's feline namesake, the lyrics contained were dictated to McKnight over a spliff and a can of salmon with the infamous cat. D-Mac (via Otis) hold a flow of their own, often on very personal terms - Love & Basketball waxes nostalgic over a life lived on the road and eventually lost to a cubicle; the titular Otis' Theme reads as a narrative from the cat himself, boasting of conquests of fish and love affairs with the pet-sitter. On production duty, JASS co-boss T-Dredz carries the record with the signature guitar chops, razor-sharp snare hits, eclectic samples, and interesting compression one would expect. Still, he progresses within his own sound, while taking a more refined approach to the beats as an ode to classic hip hop. Tightly focused in scope but flawlessly executed, Dredz' work invokes the sticky warmth of a summer evening. Comprising the other half of McKnight's acoustic duo, BadKnight, Emily Lenae makes a cameo appearance, rounding out the album with her trademark jazz vocal treatment. Sir Froderick returns on artwork duty & knocks a remix out of the park. Otis comes together as a unique and fully-realized concept - an instant classic.

While known for his work in Boston's contemporary indie scene including the legendary Grass is Green and other groups including Supervolcano, Vending Machetes, and the Dirty Dishes (bass + guitar, guitar + keys, bass, and drums, respectively), Boston-born, Roslindale-raised Michael John Thomas III, aka MJTIII, also plays a little-known but important role of maverick engineer and mastering enthusiast - his fingerprints mark countless releases and not-yet-releases within JASS' circles as well as Boston's underground and beyond. Equally comfortable behind the console with one of his bands as with a more electronically-focused work, Thomas applies a mechanical, analog-based, often tape-driven approach to his productions that not only seeps through his own numerous solo electronic productions as MJTIII, but is also extremely appealing to work with as an outside artist. It is this mix of experiences that he brings to Contemporary and Past Events, 41 minutes of vinyl selections ranging from Swiss post-punk, Irish shoegaze, Italian psychedelia, and Iranian garage to Philadelphia soul, with a DJ's ear for contrast and congruency. Solid, driving cuts from the rock canon like Grauzone's Eisbär & the nimble, stretchy punk of My Bloody Valentine's Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside) are placed throughout the mix, with sudden turns and highlights such as Alessandro Alessandroni's Political Congress, a bizarre, modern form of 'active' lounge music. Thomas offers a refreshing look back at styles you may have overlooked and an open-armed invitation to reconsider your listening habits.

Uncle Jimmy was a patient in what he called the “puzzle factory” I asked him why he called it that, he told me in the last puzzle factory he stayed at one of the patients there had called it that. He said maybe it’s because we do a lot of puzzles there. Or maybe it’s because they are trying to put all the puzzle pieces together to figure out what it is we have. During my stay there I wrote down things other patients had said and put pieces of the quotes together to make this song. It ended up being a testament to the treatment we received.

The words recorded came from individuals with different diagnoses, different genes, different backgrounds, and different ways of thinking and coping. Medication was the main form of treatment we received while we were there, we were not allowed to go outside and there was no one-on-one therapy. We spent a majority of our time with each other. 

We mostly talked about what the doctors thought our diagnoses were and how they were treating us. We talked about how our illnesses had ruined many of our relationships with our friends and families. We talked about how misunderstood we felt- even to each other and about how isolated each of us felt. 

This song is dedicated to them and to all those who struggle with mental illness, the stigma surrounding it, and receiving treatment. Proceeds go to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation for grants to aid in the research of mental illness.

I’m Here is the debut release from Clebs, the preternatural duo of Swiss vocalist Emilie Weibel and Atlanta-bred producer/drummer Jason Nazary. Elements of the contemporary found in Nazary’s production, embellished by Weibel’s unique polyrhythmic phrasing, filter through the lens of the non-human, forming Clebs’ uncanny & often spiritual musical vocabulary.

Informed by emergency and the ensued paranoia of world catastrophes, the title track presents a narrative of an immigrant’s endeavor, the separation anxiety of loved ones & a constant sense of urgency. Opener “Homemade Bread” showcases Weibel’s eclectic approach through the use of loosely constructed language paired with extensive vocal looping and manipulation to paranormal result. “Light Playing” culminates the album with an anthem for interdimensional travelling inspired by the novella The Turn of The Screw. Led by Weibel’s supernatural mantra, the song disintegrates into a frantic amalgam with the addition of Nazary’s drumming interplayed with electronic textures. Here, laughter and electronically processed ramblings blur the lines of composition & improvisation, revealing the group’s more playful side.

Clebs was born from a shared interest in improvisation and off-kilter club music, and I’m Here casts a new light on the distinct styles of its collaborators. Weibel has spent her time in New York honing her skills as a vocalist, mentored by acclaimed modern jazz vocalist Sara Serpa as well as performing with Shelley Hirsch, Adam Rudolph, and JASS alumni Ari Finkel. With Clebs, she expands her technique beyond the experimental jazz scene, which she has explored with her solo alias oMoO. Over the last 13 years,, Nazary has had his hands in a plethora of projects, performing with Olga Bell, Bear in Heaven, Empyrean Atlas, and others including his solo compositions as So Ghost. From his production work on Bell’s early releases to his more recent efforts recording drums for Helado Negro, his well-rounded talent has made Nazary an in-demand contributor in New York’s experimental circles.

Haunting interruptions & dynamic transformation buoyed by a thorough melodicism forms the bedrock of Clebs’ sound, and I’m Here utilizes this duality to extraterrestrial effect. I‘m Here will be released via JASS in limited cassette, CD, and digital formats on May 25th, 2018.

Falling Guitar is Kallie Lampel’s first release for JASS since 2017’s Lamp Shade. A collection of seven minimal pieces using a stripped-down setup of guitar, a modest set of effects and a occasionally a handheld tape cassette recorder, the album possesses a simple but luminous brilliance, with a sense of motion suspended in the night sky.

This soft foundation of the spiraling loop & the latitude of volume control elicit the singular & impulsive works of Falling Guitar to present as apparitions patiently making themselves present, just visible enough to etch out their woolly topographic characteristics before fading away into the distance. The brief nature of this collection belies its focus & patience: Falling Guitar is an exercise in solitude, spaciousness, and spontaneous creation.
