🪩 story time 🪩

June 2011. Months away from being 19. It’s the weekend. A group of us are getting together for a final get down before sending one of our good friends off to join the Marine Corps.
The plan is to attend an underground warehouse rave in Oakland, CA. I have yet to attend one to this point.

At the time this was ironic because when I was brought into this specific circle of people, I was actually the only one that listened to electronic music at all. With the hyphy movement still ringing through the Bay and crews like Young Money and Odd Future pushing fresher sounds, rap was the primary genre at most parties. A handful of us were dug into the local punk/indie scene but it wasn’t until @skrillex dropped “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” that we saw the real shift to electronic music. And I loved every second of it. Happy to no longer be the solo weirdo listening to bleeps and bloops.

So now everyone is into raves and finding the cuts and I’m the only one who has yet to experience the magic outside of my headphones. Needless to say I was looking forward to this party very much.

Multiple cars piled up and we head out; our destination…a set of coordinates that led to an alley in East Oakland..the “map-point”.

Upon arrival, the alley is pitch black but lined with cars. As we make our way towards a space to park I notice the outlines of people in all of these cars and my heart starts racing.

Holy shit. This is real. We park and wait.

What seemed like hours later, a short school bus pulls down the alley and people start pouring out of their cars.

The first track off the WALL2WALL EP, SHORT BUS ALLEYWAY, is meant to capture the feeling of my heart racing as I got out of the car and stepped onto the school bus, pushing forward into an exhilarating unknown.

🪩 story time pt. 2 🪩

The bus drives through the backstreets of Oakland seemingly in endless loops until everyone on board has lost complete orientation with the exception of an occasional glance at a blurry street sign. As someone who can romanticize just about anything, I was already head over heels for the experience as we passed around a bottle of Jack Daniel’s; my heart still pounding through my chest.

Eventually we start to slow and the driver approaches a large rolling gate, a couple of dark figures pushed it back as we got closer. Through the windshield we could see that the yard was packed. At this point keeping track of everyone was the last thing on my mind. I didn’t see a single speaker and I was ready to find them.

As I exited the bus I caught visual of the entrance to the warehouse and got to it, walking through clouds of cigarette and weed smoke as the crowds chatter reduced to background noise around me.

Like pushing through a funnel, I joined the mass into the inner hallways, the bass hinting at us as we made our way down the line. One by one we were greeted and given membership cards, some were given stamps on the cards they already had. What the fuck is this? This is literally it. As corny as it sounds to say, I felt like I was coming home for the first time.
And as if to validate that feeling, out of nowhere one of my best friends was in front of me with the biggest smile on his face.

“I got you something.” He held out his hand.
In it was a blueish green pill stamped on top.
I looked back at his eyes. His smile still ear to ear.
“It’s clean don’t worry.”

Two seconds later it was down the hatch.

pt. 4 - leave me here 

I was feeling it now. Sweat was pouring out of me, my mind was racing with the beats, I needed to stay moving. There was a hint of anxiety that started to sneak up on me and I decided to explore the rest of the warehouse. 

There was another larger hallway that had lights and people flowing in and out which I soon found out led to two other rooms with separate stages and sound systems. They really do this shit. This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen on an underground level. Nobody I knew was throwing parties like this. This is actually insane. 

Room two held my attention for a long time. I would later discover what I was listening to was called Minimal or Minimal Techno. Legend has it the dj was Cody White or Sean Ocean but some say they weren’t even at that party. We may never know. 

Another ping of anxiety and I suddenly start feeling extremely claustrophobic. I need to get some fresh air and a cigarette. I make my way towards an exit but on my way out I pass the third room. The sounds crossing the threshold intrigued me, the room was empty except for the DJ and the speakers. It felt safe. I tucked myself in and let myself take a few deep breathes. 

Where the previous sets had seemed to move through tracks of a single style, this dj was transitioning between a multitude of styles seemingly with no effort. It was a perfect blend of sounds I was familiar with and music I was being introduced to live for the first time. I gave in completely. Some clothes came off, eyes rolled back, arms and legs floating with the frequencies. I was gone. Forrest Green had my soul rolling out of my body.

Pt. 3 - wall2wall 

As I’m waiting for the magic bean to settle in, I did my best to make sense of what was happening around me. The place was packed and it was much louder than any party or local show I’d been to yet. The decor was mostly lights flashing in different areas with some sort of projection happening in certain spots. The atmosphere was surreal to me. Complete chaos organized into a living, breathing community. The dance floor was actually full and people were actually dancing. There was a heavy sense of freedom. Standing in the back of the room soaking it in for a second, I realized the wall behind me was actually a stack of speakers. It wasn’t long after I made my way to find a spot in the crowd.

I landed somewhere in middle of the dance floor in a room that would probably cause permanent hearing loss, coming up on a bean, and all of sudden there she was. 
Idk if you’ve ever heard the song Mushrooms by Marshall Jefferson (I’m fond of the Justin Martin remix) but that’s the only way I can describe it. 
One of the most beautiful women I had ever seen appeared out of nowhere in front of me and before I could really understand how it happened, we were dancing and kissing each other like no one else was around. And just as quickly, she disappeared. She told me she would be back but the ticking time bomb inside of me had other plans. I could already start to feel myself short circuiting as my teeth began to chatter and my eyes jittered back and forth.

Pt 5. Ever Afters 

I don’t know how long my friends had been watching me dance alone, half naked in the back room of the party but they had all gathered in the entrance, their priceless smiles welcoming me back to earth as I opened my eyes again. 

We all made our way outside plotting our journey home. And that was it. 

I stood amongst those remaining and thought to myself, this is what I’ve been looking for. I spent the ride home thinking about all the insane music I heard(still hearing the beats in my head) with a handful of merch in my lap, and a fire to create burning through me.

The rest as they say is history.
