Tucked away in his home studio, Californian tech house veteran John Tejada has been hatching lush, timeless harmonies that range from the free floating and celestial to the truly pulsating, for nearly two decades. Having trained on drums and the piano at an early age, the prolific producer/DJ/label head has sustained a self avowed appetite for extensive synth noodling and hardware tinkering throughout his career. And yet, to his great credit, Tejada’s gear lust has never gotten in the way of his looping sonics’ emotional high points, nor has his use of patch bays or drum boxes ever been informed by fleeting trends. He has published music on many labels (7th City, Slices of Life, ~scape), launched his own imprint Palette in 1996, and is now part of Kompakt’s esteemed roster. Signs Under Test, his latest LP for the stalwart techno imprint, is rooted in a gorgeous kind of analog tape enhanced nostalgia, with his spacious arrangements facilitating a total immersion into Tejada’s techno dreamland. Also known for his meticulous rhythms and mechanical groove, MUTEK patrons got a second stab at the hefty Tejada catalogue this year, following an energetic 2013 appearance as part of the Kompakt showcase.

This week we step into an i-DJ from an iconic mainstay of London’s underground house and techno scene. Enzo Siragusa’s FUSE night began at Brick Lane's infamous 93 Feet East and moved to Village Underground where it cultivated one hell of a following. Now running parties at Space, Ibiza the deep rolling tech sound that FUSE has come synonymous with has inspired a new wave of producers and DJs, further cementing it as somewhat of an institution within the clubbing world.

Given the impact they have had, it’s hard to believe Leftwing & Kody only launched in 2012. The duo’s first EP brought them immediate recognition from their industry peers and the rest they say is history. With an infectious sound that draws on swinging hi hats, low slung synths and masterly crafted basslines, and by joining the dots between the past and the present in their own unique way, Leftwing & Kody have since been back in the Beatport charts with three top 10 records. No wonder Mixmag and DJ Mag ear marked them as ones to watch in 2013 where the guys were also nominated for the “Best Breakthrough DJ” at the Best Of British DJ Mag awards.

2014 has seen L&K expand and experiment with their music and has included remixing and working with House music pioneers such as Robert Owens, Todd Terry, Romanthony & Roger Sanchez. With their style touching all the basses between House & Techno, it's no surprise support has come from the likes of Carl Cox, James Zabiela, MK Coyu, Loco Dice, Booka Shade, Yousef, Steve Lawler, Adam Beyer, Jimmy Edgar and Huxley which shows how broad their production palette is.

Following on from such high profile props the pair have much more in the pipeline including expanding their label Lost Records which will see the duo release their debut and highly anticipated collaboration towards the end of 2014. Their gig schedule for this year has seen performances at some of the best venues and festivals in London, Ibiza, Dubai, Belgium, Switzerland, Brighton, Amsterdam,  Berlin, Dublin, Leeds, Reading, Belfast, Nottingham, Birmingham, Liverpool, Lyon, Manchester and more so expect this energetic duo to sky rocket in the months to come.

Sometimes I'm asked to describe my sound in a few words. Trying to describe my sound is a task I don't enjoy doing and actually something, as a DJ, I hope I'm never able to do. If I *can* describe my sound, I take that as a sign that I've constrained myself or gotten too comfortable with what I'm doing. The moment I realize I'm artistically comfortable is the moment I start to get artistically uncomfortable. As of late, I've been starting to get a little too comfortable, so this mix is a response to that.

This mix doesn't come completely out of left field - for the most part, I hold on to a sound I'm known for: melodic, deep. But I take a step out of the comfort zone for a chunk of the mix and explore "underwater," touching on the stripped, trippy, percussive side of house music. I even stepped out of my technical comfort zone for some time layering 3, and at one point, 4 tracks at the same time.

As a whole, this mix transports itself in 3 likenesses: chugging on land, swimming underwater, and flying in the sky. A swan is one of the few animals that can do the same, so I present you, A Swan's Song. Hope you enjoy.

Matt Tolfrey's career really kicked off in 2002 when he held his residency at Nottingham's The Bomb. There he was able to showcase his varied selection, open mind and the ability to read and lead a crowd. These skills made it possible for the allrounder to keep UK house and techno very much on the map, helping him link with both veterans and the younger generation.
