Patience [EP]
My first EP release following cancer diagnosis and surgery, I’m back with 6 bangers of sampled freshness. Coming from deep in that box of old cables everyone’s got, it includes samples from Kitboga, Netflix’s Marco Polo, Rainbow Six Siege, and The Shawshank Redemption amongst others. A mixture of trap, grime, hip-hop and several other genres, Patience is an EP of six tunes that is heavily influenced by my moods and feelings with every sample chosen and layered to tell a story – each track and the samples used alluding to some of my experiences and qualities.

Hood Beauty

A massive fan of The Wire since I first saw it in my twenties, the music contained in it, and the use of the music to add atmosphere to the brilliant writing always stayed with me as a brilliant example of that art and skill. Always having an appreciation for the music used on the soundtrack for that series as well, I always wanted to make a sampling remix album using some of the absolutely amazing talent and musicality that was assembled as part of that project. Taking samples from across the genres used in that soundtrack album, The Wiretaps EP layers this with old school grime and hip-hop vocals to weave them into their own songs with meanings, atmospheres and hearts all of their own. I hope you find something you like, and check out the originals too!

Faceless People

Drawing on my love of all things bass, these six drum and bass tracks sample everything from the incredible voice of Amy McDonald, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, through Kitboga, and all the way to Nate Dogg and some classic G-Funk.

Quick on the heels of my last two releases, this one takes a different route through the back streets travelling at 180BPM rather than the usual 140 – all genres are welcome here. 

All the same, still bass heavy and with some pumping melodies, as well as some more of my own composing I’m pleased that each track meets my head bopping criteria.

Layering a mixture of the sublime vocals of both the Strangler’s Golden Brown and Sizzla’s vocal from Dry Cry – check them out if you don’t know these stone-cold bangers from back in the day – with an introduction from Ricky Gervais can’t go wrong!

This one’s a heartfelt lament for a girl of the roads, one too many people know.

An updated Grime refix of Dave Brubeck’s excellent Take 5, take more also samples Shorty from Scary Movie explaining the rules of a snatch and run (This channel doesn’t condone that kind of thing, of course!). One of my favourite Jazz tunes, I hope this goes down well and while not coming close to the original or many other covers – I hope this one finds it’s place and introduces even one new person to the work of Dave Brubeck.

Take More

Sampling Matt Berry’s character from Year of the Rabbit, he takes us on a journey to the slums, where we all learnt in Titanic the REAL good music is. Another blend of Jazz melodies, Grime synths and Trap 808s - this one’s a marcher for climbing mountains.

Step Out

A relaxed, laid-back fusion of grime and Jazz, this one has some layered vocals for a bit of depth and a trumpet that I couldn’t resist letting ring out. I love making music even if no one see’s this, big up yourselves whoever does!

“Taking footage from a short film captured in London at the height of the Jazz age, it sheds new light on the history of 140 bpm music.” Said no one ever.

Cold Night

Sampling Damien Marley’s tune with Skrillex, this personal ode to dubstep, fire music and ska is layered with piano, strings and some dark synths to get the head’s bopping. This is one of my favourite synths I’ve made so hope you’ll like it!

The Fire

A more melodic blending of Jazz, Trap and Grime, this tune is a percy with deep synths, dark bass and a haunting melody this has shoulders rolling in the 1ft studio. Turn this one up to 11 and let the bass boom out.

Good Music

Sampling one of my favourite comedies, the Fast Show, this one’s an introduction to the album – setting out the store for what’s to come in the rest of the project. Sounding far too much like an art critic, I’ll leave it at it being a relaxed tune to get the heads bouncing on a chill one.

Welcome To Jazz Club

Patti Smith’s passionate vocal from the 80’s ballad makes the perfect accompaniment and story telling for me to add to this ballad-inspired more relaxed grime and trap instrumental laced with a melodic organ and pulsing piano.

Sampling Kurt Cobain’s amazing vocal on Smells Like Teen Spirit, go check out the original as it’s a banger but I’ve added a 140 twist to it, a booming bass and a dark melody that was making the heads bop in the 1ft studio.

From VladTV, the legendary Crunchy Black’s wisdom fits perfectly over this rock reggae dub trap and grime instrumental. Ready for some hot fire, big up to the originators and OGs.

Think Smart

Sampling Evanescence’s incredible, powerful vocal it transforms perfectly into a darker tune about rolling the roads with a cold soul. Paired with a booming bass and a deep dub and trap style, this ones a persy.

Cold Spirit ft. Amy Lee [Unofficial Jay-El Dub]

A song I grew up listening to, I’ve always loved the powerful vocal that spoke to people as I’m sure most of these kinds of autobiographies do. Paired with a deep 140 beat and a journeying cello, this one had my head rocking along with the choir.

Stories ft. Baby Cham [Unofficial Jay-El Dub]

Cortana, and not the failed Microsoft product - everyone knows her as the Halo sidekick, and with her taking us along on the selection process for the next Master Chief this tune’s sure to be foot tapper. It’ll always take you back to playing the co-op campaign with the mates after school – yes, I’m old enough for it to have to have been split screen, but hopefully this tune has people’s head bopping wherever they are.

Spartan Soldier [ft. Halo's Cortana]

Granny Edna has been everyone’s favourite scam busting Kitboga character for a while, and I thought why not take her on a trippy, outergalactic space trip as her husband screws up the microwaves, but don’t worry, he’s watched some safety videos! For real though, this is a laid back Kitboga-sampled head bobber that’s got some rude sampling of one of my favourite episodes – link below.

Glitches [ft. Kitboga's Granny Edna]

Sampling the baddest of all teachers, Thousand Eyes from Marco Polo, this one is a fresh old-school grime inspired banger straight from the streets hopefully reaching up to find amazing feats among the clouds – it certainly made my head bop hard in the 1ft studio. Big up to all the educators.

Hard Work [ft. Thousand Eyes]

No one can ever beat the wisdom and poise of Morgan Freeman’s Ellis in the supreme The Shawshank Redemption, and I hope that I’ve done it justice by layering it with some of the best vocals you can ever come by with some layered vocals of Arethra Franklin’s Someday We’ll All Be Free leaving me with a tune that I’m probably most proud of many that I’ve made – hope people enjoy it!

Sureshanking [ft. Shawshank Redemption]

I love any and all genres from all over the world, and especially folk music made with local instruments. Hoping to do the Mongolian musicians proud, this tune uses a Morin Khuur (Mongolian horse hair instrument) layered over a creamy deep beat to create an absolute percy! Hope you find something you like in this new grime, trap and bass track for 2024!

Mixing two old school mainstream tunes with the Black Eyed Pea’s Anxiety featuring Papa Roach and Numb by Linkin Park. Sampling the incredibly soulful The Fall by Blake Leyh used in the credits of the series and at the end of the The Wire Soundtrack, I had to make this one a banger so layering with some vocals from some modern grime classics – the meaningful vocals of P Money, Chip, Dizzee Rascal, D Double E and Jammer capping it off to finish the EP with an absolute personal favourite grime banger which is a mix of haunting and laid back while continuing that wall of soulful sound that is the sampled The Fall.

Never Fall [The Fall Unofficial Dub ft. P Money, Chip, Dizzee Rascal, D Double and Jammer]

Layered with the Tom Waits version of Way Down in the Hole, this jump-up drum and bass tune is a modern, old-school drum and bass inspired beat with a dark, grinding jump-up bassline. The third iteration of the Way Down in the Hole song used on The Wire soundtrack, they all bring a different energy and style which I’ve attempted to continue through into my three versions of ‘paths’.

[Jump-Up] Paths X Part III

Going down a dubstep route for this one, and evoking the image and feeling of grimy high rises used to house the poorest and most deprived in society where often the best music arises from – this tune layers the vocals from both Tyree Colion’s Projects and Bossman’s Ayo which were both featured on The Wire soundtrack. Blending nicely with the haunting and eerie synths and dirty bass, these elements help to reinforce the atmosphere of the song.

The Tower [Unofficial The Wire Dub]

Sampling and combining the sublime vocals and spirit of Paul Weller’s I Walk On Gilded Splinters and the incredible musical talents showcased in Jesse Winchester’s Step by Step, this melodic, deep-south inspired trap tune layered with the vocals of 50Cent, Eminem, Ca$his and Lloyd Banks taken from the legendary You Don’t Know. Blending these elements together, it gives a head-bobbing, trap-inspired jammer. Having been a big fan of You Don’t Know since I was kid too young to be listening to it, I think it fits the sentiment of Paul Weller’s chopped vocals and the meaning of them from I Walk On Gilded Splinters.

Firewalking [Unofficial Dub ft Paul Weller, 50 Cent, Eminem, Ca$his and Lloyd Banks]

[Garage] Paths X Part 2

Centred around a lilting baseline reminiscent of 80s funk, and using the vocal from Michael Franti’s Oh My God – Headliners is as relevant as it ever was, and can be take a number of ways this song and it’s title interpreting it as an artistic comment on the press and what’s seen as ‘interesting’ to get viewers, and the spread of fake news for views against the contrast of reality. Layered over a pumping, brass-flecked back beat that’s a mix of grime, old-school funk and a little reggae I’m hoping this one will get the heads bopping hard – plus, don’t take it too seriously, it’s pretentious art. 😉

Headliners [Unofficial Dub ft Michael Franti]

The intro coming from the biggest lad of lads Detective McNulty and using the brilliant Blind Boys of Alabama version of Way Down in the Hole, this grime tune brings together those wonderful vocals with a dark grime tune layered with samples of the saxophone from that tune and centred around a dark double bass mash-up synth this is what I imagine they were listening to and jamming to far before electronic music was ever a thing. The vocal fitting the feeling of the song perfectly, it’s a dark grime tune for the roads.

[Grime] Paths X Part 1

Omar’s whistle at the beginning is a chilling sound used throughout the incredible Wire series, and it makes up the perfect introduction to this double time grime/garage tune. Layering the superb grime vocals of Face, P Money and Ghetts alongside the timeless vocals of Busta Rhymes and Beenie Man it creates a dark tune that’s a look a trip into the idea of what it takes to turn a person into a legendary good figure. Layered over the incredible Greek song Efuge Efuge by Stelios Kazantzidis which speaks of a lost love, it perfectly fits the mood of the tune, and is used in a pivotal moment in the series The Wire – making it even more impactful to those that know the scene.
