Here's my DJ Mix recorded and released in December 2020 for the 625th edition of Invite's Choice Podcast. The podcast has since decommissioned his SoundCloud account. I enjoyed putting this mix together and it would be a shame for it to be no longer available online so I have re-uploaded. The mix was recorded on 4 CDJs and features over 50 tracks.

IThe term quality over quantity is painfully overused, but in Jay Clarke’s case it’s a fitting descriptive for the way the UK artist approaches every facet of his musical career. A trusted Klockworks artist, he’s contributed two acclaimed EPs (KW18, KW28) and a track (‘Perdita’) to the KW20 compilation, while Ben Klock has selected him to play Photon events at Berghain, Bassiani and Awakenings at Gashouder.

From 2015 to 2020, Jay was a trusted fabric resident before graduating from their resident’s programme; a colourful and dynamic DJ, playing across the Techno spectrum. He is best known for his energetic and groovy peak-time DJ sets across Europe and beyond, taking heavy influence from 90’s Techno. He seamlessly blends together modern rollers with percussive loopy hard-groove, alongside straight-up heavy bangers. DJ Mag rightly heralded his skills, stating: ‘Jay is considered in his approach, but unconstricted by stylistic boundaries, happy to mix nosebleed slammers with heady rollers and even more upbeat or electro efforts’.

Jay also runs the thoughtfully-curated BLACKAXON label, a creative outlet allowing him to showcase sounds from across the Techno and wider Electronic spectrum, including releases from emerging talents such as Yant and David Piras, forthcoming releases from Kaylah and Alex Morgan, as well as his own free-wheeling work. 

 In 2020 Jay went on to release his debut EP on Slam’s iconic Soma Records imprint, followed by a remix of Goldie at the behest of the Metalheadz legend, with further releases to come on BLACKAXON and Soma.

Our first release is by Jay Clarke, a London based producer and resident of the renowned monthly party, VOID. The first release will showcase killer cuts from Jay himself, each showcasing a brand of Techno narrative that’s become now synonymous with his contradistinctive sound.

Jay’s production methods are by no means homogenous to one strain of dancefloor Techno, his DJ sets regularly encompass tracks, tools or elements from the broader spectrum of electronic music, and you’re sure to find an array of influences in abundance throughout his own productions. So it’s not just First Flight by name, it’s also First Flight by nature here for Jay.

First Flight features three original tracks from Jay himself and UK producer JoeFarr has been drafted in to take care of remix duties here, and brings his trademark rough- edged Techno sound along for the ride. This really isn’t one for the faint-hearted; a great addition to what is a supremely versatile and well-rounded release.

Entitās, is the second instalment of Jay Clarke’s BLACKAXON imprint, and sees the label boss bring out the big guns in the form of three distinct and diverse cuts. First up is Entity, an autonomic monster which has sweat soaked energy written all over it. It’s auspiciously one part deep, and more than double just as twisted. Things are far from linear with Entity, it’s mercilessly the sum of it’s own parts, and has the hallmarks of a true big room pleaser written all over it. A truly authentic demonstration of the old adage “It’s not where you are going, it’s how you get there”. Entity is certain to be reached for by all of the major players on the Techno circuit for a long time to come.

On the flip, Ghosts Of Acid is the Yin to Entity’s Yang. A plangent and introspective groove opens up with wispy cymbals, cleverly placed rims, hats and claps. Exploratory and evolving subaqueous acidic forays dare the listener to dive in a little deeper, with the reward being a very proficient and efficient take on the now classic Acid sound.

Existence Through Perception seeks to carry on where the previous two tracks left off. A driving groove and sinister hook lets up briefly midway to a near triumphant fanfare, only to be brought back to it’s mischievous overture. A perfect late night/peak time track for DJ’s looking to elevate the bar of their set just one more rung higher.

Ben Klock’s Klockworks has become a reference point for what modern day techno has become, for its very special 20th release Ben Klock has curated a 20-track compilation representative of the label’s past, present and future. 

With the significance of the catalog number approaching, Ben decided to put together a collection of tracks from all Klockworks artists, including himself, the final oeuvre from the late Trevino, some up-and-coming artists and those who have never released before. Each deliver one track to assemble a compilation which plays as an album, not only for the dance floor but ranging through from techno to deep atmospheres to left-field to acid and house.

With the support of DVS1 and Etapp Kyle, both protégées of the label touring alongside Klock since their debut, each deliver tracks that explicate their diverse talents. Heiko Laux as well as Benny Rodrigues who created his alias ROD to release Klockworks 07 back in 2011, go outside the box to contribute dream-like melodies. While Steve Rachmad, under his more techno-centric alias Sterac, and the artist behind Klockworks 18, Jay Clarke, both present a hypnotic intensity. Trevino’s legacy remains with his stunning contribution, a track he entitled ’Sombre Tones’ that Ben Klock has been using so far to open each Photon set as well as the event series official video.  

Dax J, one of techno’s rising stars is included as a new face to the label as well as Jon Hester, Troy, Ritzi Lee, Reus, High Position, Yoikol, and Adam Craft. Newa, a female artist joining the roster from Tbilisi who will also be returning soon; and Vincent, having the honor to deliver the closing track, finishes off with an unmistakable house jam to illuminate any dance floor.

The impressive three-double EP package is due out at the end of September and includes artwork created by Ben Klock who is responsible for each Klockworks record design to date.

fabric resident Jay Clarke returns to Klockworks for his second solo release on the label following his EP in 2016 and his contribution to the ‘Klockworks 20’ compilation ‘Perdita’. Through this new 12-inch, he presents a mix of tough modern rollers, dreamy Detroit melodies, and mysterious atmospheres.

With tracks like ‘In Dreams’, the UK producer creates cinematic aesthetics that he draws from David Lynch movies. ‘‘The Cage’ and ‘Visualise’ both represent Jay experimenting with a new way of working, using sequencers and chopped up and pitched down D&B samples.

It’s no surprise these cuts have been Ben Klock’s secret weapons during the summer season to tear apart the most iconic dance floors such as Berghain, Printworks and Time Warp.

UK techno don Jay Clarke joins the Soma ranks with The Kicker. Jay has started making his mark on the global techno scene with some serious releases via the awesome Klockworks label, and of course his own BLACKAXON imprint. Jay’s sound is characterised by elements of straight-up intense techno, blended with deeper Detroit-esque elements, culminating in a unique and well-produced style.

Straight Through opens up Jay’s Soma account and focuses firmly on the dance floor. Looped out, driving percussive elements push the track as hypnotic synths keep the rhythm flowing. Overlook has a tribalistic feel to it as wooden percussion work into a perfectly orchestrated groove allowing chopping hi hats and rides to deliver intensity as swelling atmosphere keep things ominous. Taking things down a deeper path, The Spark bounds with a well-crafted groove as spatial synth work brings more melodic and emotive aspects to the forefront. Title track The Kicker offers up the most diverse sounding cut on the EP with broken beat rhythms and discordant, almost jazzy synths breathing a distinct life throughout the track.

Jay Clarke - Killer Clowns From Outer Space [MOTZVA02]

From Another Mind founders SHDW & Obscure Shape announce charity remix package featuring an array of rising talents with all proceeds doubled by the German duo and donated to Ärzte Ohne Grenzen (Médecins Sans Frontières aka Doctors Without Borders).

Opening the package, Anterist's remix of SHDW & Obscure Shape's 'Die Weiße Rose' rolls forward with cantering kicks, off-beat hats and murky synths, leading into Jay Clarke's contrasting version with its chuggy bassline, piercing stabs and murky atmospherics - broken up by celestial breakdown at the midway point. Next, Leksom's take on the same track is built upon gloomy sound design and features syncopated drums and oscillating effects.

STXRK then remixes 'Gesang Der Toten Dinge' to create a relentless groove courtesy of precision kicks, delayed notes and tantalising arps. Finally, the package concludes with a curveball remix of 'Die Weiße Rose' from Underher who creates an epic number opening with a suspenseful and atmospheric intro, incorporating a brand new and original serene vocal from Eleonora, before shifting into a meandering rhythm - the result is a twisted and esoteric aesthetic.

The term quality over quantity is painfully overused, but in Jay Clarke’s case it’s a fitting descriptive for the way the UK artist approaches every facet of his musical career. A trusted Klockworks artist, he’s contributed two acclaimed EPs (KW18, KW28) and a track (‘Perdita’) to the KW20 compilation, while Ben Klock has selected him to play Photon events at Berghain, Bassiani and Awakenings at Gashouder.

From 2015 to 2020, Jay was a trusted fabric resident before graduating from their resident’s programme; a colourful and dynamic DJ, playing across the Techno spectrum. He is best known for his energetic and groovy peak-time DJ sets across Europe and beyond, taking heavy influence from 90’s Techno. He seamlessly blends together modern rollers with percussive loopy hard-groove, alongside straight-up heavy bangers. DJ Mag rightly heralded his skills, stating: ‘Jay is considered in his approach, but unconstricted by stylistic boundaries, happy to mix nosebleed slammers with heady rollers and even more upbeat or electro efforts’.

Jay also runs the thoughtfully-curated BLACKAXON label, a creative outlet allowing him to showcase sounds from across the Techno and wider Electronic spectrum, including releases from emerging talents such as Yant and David Piras, forthcoming releases from Kaylah and Alex Morgan, as well as his own free-wheeling work. 

 In 2020 Jay went on to release his debut EP on Slam’s iconic Soma Records imprint, followed by a remix of Goldie at the behest of the Metalheadz legend, with further releases to come on BLACKAXON and Soma.
