PREMIERE: Quimbie - How To Cry Pt. 1 [Janx Records]

Following releases with YAM, Tiff’s Joints, Dr Banana and Touching Bass, artist Romaal Kultan (Ollie Malin) now inaugurates his own record label, Personal Discs.

No Time Like The Future showcases Romaal Kultan’s finest productions, charting a distinct personal trajectory between hiphop, house and broken beat. Opener One Moment Please is a sassy boom bap affair, with an unexpected nod towards jungle. Music Room, made in collaboration with producer Cypriano, is a patient, moody chugger — a tapestry of piano, organic percussion and crackly vinyl samples laced with acid.

On the B-side, Personal Effects delivers a unique, hypnotic broken beat groove, where swelling synths and a twinkling Rhodes meditate together in careful arrangement. Finally, the intimate title track No Time Like the Future stomps off into the sunrise, carried along by a rolling, yearning dreaminess.

Each one of these tracks represents a special, all-too-rare moment of ecstasy in the studio. I hope that this feeling lives on in the music.

Having been around for almost a full calendar year, the sub-label PNP has already made quite the name for itself during the past several months. Managed by producer Fede Lng, this imprint is a spin-off of his already successful parent label Axe On Wax, which is responsible for exposing the world to such artists like Kirk The Flirt, Jesse Bru, Trudge, and Mall Grab.

Although Axe On Wax specializes in a more traditional sense of house music, PNP appears to be all about the disco - a way in which Fede and his friends can release edits of their favorite tunes of old. For DJs looking to spice up their sets with unadulterated funk, look no further than their upcoming record PNP 003, which features songs by Tom Jay, Braga Cicuit, Pacific Bureau, and Fede Lng himself.

The fifth track rounding out the bunch comes from little-known producer Hank Youngman (Hank YM) and is titled Nao Nao. Hailing from Melbourne, Hank seems to have a strong affinity for Marcos Valle's classic Nao Tem Nada Nao. In his edit of the original, Hank simplifies the tune - stripping out many of its lyrics while concentrating on the quintessential Brazilian ad-libs that are present throughout the piece. This manages to give the song a lot of room, allowing Hank to fit in his assortment of looped basslines, guitar riffs, and space-age synths that help transform it into an all-out groove. 

Set to come out sometime this fall, this edit already has us excited to get our hands on a copy of this forthcoming release!
