A quietly vital presence in Italy’s underground electronic scene, Nicola Penna — better known under a constellation of aliases including Future Jazz Ensemble, Nico Disco, and Nasty Boy — returns with a new chapter under his NBI moniker: Alphawaves, a four-track EP of introspective, deeply musical club material on Burnin Music.

Drawing on the dreamlike textures of early Italian deep house and the emotive pulse of Larry Heard’s productions, Alphawaves is an ode to mood and movement. Each track feels spiritually guided — a reflection of Penna’s rare craftsmanship as a multi-instrumentalist, and a welcome deviation from over-quantized electronic music.

These aren’t just club tracks; they are meditations in rhythm. Opening with lush pads, loose percussion, and warm basslines that recall the golden age of Italian Dream House, the EP also carries a timeless, soulful energy found in Penna’s previous work for labels like Sähkö, Native Tongue, and Ten Lovers Music. Despite a discography that spans over a decade and several underground classics, Penna remains something of a well-kept secret. Living in Berlin this summer, 4004 will get lots of inspiration and will have a busy musical journey. And hopefully some sleep! Following a double dose of newfound Los Angeles talent, Apron Records founder, Steven Julien (aka Funkineven) returns home with the debut release from London-based enigma, Molinaro.

APRON 35 is classic Apron Records material; five slabs of soul-drenched techno anchored by groove and grit from a new name with plenty of experience. Molinaro — who has honed his production and DJing craft for over a decade — is one of the capital's best technicians behind the decks. A skill most recently recognised by NTS Radio, who rewarded him with a regular monthly slot on the airwaves. The first of which shot straight into the NTS Picks for the week.

Opener "GIO" cements the tone from the off, drifting in with warm, enveloping pads, quickly joined by beefy drums and percussion in a five-minute sprawl out. "JTL" is arguably the standout; a boogie-influenced roller aimed at prime time dancefloor. "TY" and "MOLOW" showcase the deeper, moodier face of Molinaro's sound palette before the beatless “SOFAR" rounds things out, paying homage to Ryuichi Sakamoto's synth brilliance.

Reposting a mix I did during RMCO for the lovely people at Saturday Selects. Being in lockdown has its ups and down - I love being able to collaborate or produce mixes for our local scene! It's really quite different from playing a set in the clubs because sometimes I find myself accommodating to the line up or the club's sound. 

A lot of times I find it hard to describe my preferred sound but I waft in and out of electronic, disco remixes, house and techno. Mostly happy, uplifting sounds I imagine myself dancing to at the start of the night or when the sun comes up at a festival. 

I hope you enjoy this little mix i put together and I hope it makes you smile and bob around as it does for me as I type this sitting here in my ridiculously bright office :)
