Summary: This song is about unrequited romantic desire. How everytime you let down your guard and rest, they're the first thing that plagues your mind. How you can't quite stop being so aware or act the way you usually do when they are around. How you know nothing will ever come from pondering and pursing this one-sided desire, but you keep wanting something to happen.

Differentiation factor: This song has a very country or folk sound and is mostly in 3/4 except for the last 2 sentences which are either in 4/4 or 2 3/4 bars followed by a 2/4 bar. I believe this makes the song quite peculiar.

Summary of idea:

The song is about freedom. More specifically in this song, it is the freedom to not be controlled by emotions, to be able to forgive, love, let go of the past, move on, live on and keep walking on from past mistakes, along with the joy that comes with it.

Differentiation factor:
Freedom feels unrestricted, yet it also brings about a lingering / lost sensation, whereby there is suddenly a huge increase in options, choices, decisions, space, time etc etc. Yet, for some people, freedom is short lived because they keep returning to their own mistakes.

The song stands out by being in a relatively high key for the vocals not only to uplift, but to also replicate the sensation of relief and tension whenever she sings. The use of a pop rock genre, to represent youthfulness, relating to how young people always want their own personal freedom.

Summary: 

This piece is a instrumental musical depiction of war. (Inspired from blackshot theme) When there is war, houses, infrastructure, lives are lost and destroyed. This piece musically depicts the journey of what happens during war and the ending of war . This piece is also focused on the death of people during war and the agony in the aftermath of the war. 

Differentiation Factor 

This piece specially focuses on the death of people during war. The word “funeral” came into my mind when I think of death. Unlike other war pieces out there , they rarely focus on the funeral part when someone die during a war. I thought by highlighting the funeral part (using the Chinese traditional way) would make the piece more unique 

Delivery 

During war , there will first be sirens (and you will hear that in the beginning of the piece). After that, I used percussive arpeggiator synthesiser (heavy tom with reverb) for the background to give the war vibe. I also added bomb explosions to  make it sound more like a war. After that comes the strings part where I played a line of sad melody over it to further give the war feels. Next comes the tragic death funeral part. I wanted to use Chinese traditional funeral (inspired by the ones I always hear at my void deck when theres a funeral ) to bring out this death idea. I used many gongs, Chinese drums , Tibetan singing bowl (DONG), Chinese, indian kit to create the funeral feel. I also added samples of women crying( with increase reverb) behind to mourn the death of her loved ones. I then added played some scary sounding pad using lots of minor 2nd and augmented 4th intervals to increase the tensions .

Summary:
This song is about a friend called mark, inspired by a real person. This song came about due to a personal experience with a real friend (who will not be named), but who probably knows its about him. Its about how he sneaks out of class for food, and it inspired me to come up with other reasons as to why he might or could have sneaked out of class for :)


Differentiation / Concept:
The concept of the song explores the contrast between stable melodies and lyrics, with unstable content. This means that the song is intentionally designed to be generally "boring" due to the over-stability, but is done to highlight the content, allowing the story to take the interest of the listener.

Delivery:
Simple acoustic, country genre, along with a harmony backing, to over-simplify the arrangement, giving way for the content.

Summary
I wrote this song because I thought about how fortunate a lot of us are in the world and we never realise it and I wanted to write something related to that but not in a way that would come off cheesy or cringe, which is why I chose to do it in a satirical way because I felt like once the humour wears off, it gives the listener a chance to really reflect on the message I am trying to convey.

Differentiation Factor
I believe that my piece stands out because I chose to do my song about a very serious topic in a very sarcastic way, which, although it has been done before, I feel like it hasn't been done in this year's prow yet.

Delivery
Because I wanted people to understand only what I am saying, I decided to take the focus off of everything and putting it only on the words and the singing because thats my one and only main point that I'm trying to make, and just having the same 4 chords on loop. I didn't even do anything special to the vocal tracks because I wanted it to sound very much like I am speaking directly to the listener in real life, which means there wasn't any use of autotune, chorus, delay or compression because people don't speak with those things. The only form of mixing I did is the volume automation for non-vocal tracks.

Summary

This song is about how feeling suicidal is like an abusive relationship with yourself/death. I wanted the song to gradually reveal that the persona is obsessed with death, to the point of fantasising about it, and can’t wait for it.


Differentiation factor(s)

The song is about someone that fantasises about death and treats Death as a romantic partner.


Delivery 

To get the feeling of not being able to wait for death, I wanted the guitar to sound like ticking. Then it suddenly strums to create a lurching rhythm to invoke a feeling of lurching from one bad thought to another. In the verse, the persona puts herself down and has a lot of self-hatred. It’s summarised by the line 

“im so sick of anything that mirrors me
cause there’s hole in my reflection
where my knuckles used to be”

Which implies that the person is abusive with herself , beating herself up so much to the point that she’s lost her sense of self. She also feels unnecessary and that no one cares about her.

The chorus fantasises about meeting with Death, dancing with him, and going home with him. 

The second verse continues fantasising about death, but also talks about accepting death and welcoming it with open arms. It also reveals the persona’s negative view of life being poison, so she basically sees life as a long way to achieve death. In the end, the persona implies that she just wants death to be at peace.

If Only (PROW Week 4) - Lara Johnson

I wrote this song for all the misunderstood people in this world. All those that people assume are gay but aren’t actually. 

This song came to my mind when recently people in my year began shipping me and making fun of me with a guy I was close to. Of course I had to defend my sexuality every time and try to prove I wasn’t gay. ( Although I don’t think being gay is necessarily bad).

Thus I decided that I would write a song about how I wasn’t gay, dedicated to myself and all the misunderstood guys out there. I want this song to be like a driver’s license. If someone accuses me of being homosexual, all I have to do is play this song and that will prove my heterosexuality. I started this song with very cliche lyrics and almost love song-ey. This represents the misunderstanding people usually have when they see 2 guys being close together. They immediately assume both of them are gay. But then as the pre chorus and chorus goes on to explain, that my persona is not gay. In fact, he is the straightest person alive, although he loves his bro as a friend. The song then goes on to show the persona doubting himself. Which is usually a byproduct of all the teasing and shipping. Making straight people question their sexuality. But near the end of the song, the persona’s bro explains to him that he infect, isn’t gay too. Thus this song ends with the message that 2 guys can be close but they don’t necessarily have to be gay.

My differentiation factor is that people think homosexuals are frequently misunderstood as heterosexual. But what about the straight guys who don’t want to be labelled as gay? Thus this song is from their standpoint and how two guys being close without being gay is okay.
