After the release of her first heartfelt single earlier this year, Jay brings us her second new single “Tell Me.” The song sounds like something out of a John Carney film, starting with raw, unpolished guitar strumming, before we hear Jay’s signature piano and string arrangements. 

The lyrics are raw and vulnerable, telling a story of betrayal and broken promises, posing the disquieting question: What was I worth? You can expect to hear both singles on her second self-produced album, The Breakup Album, coming out later this year.

Tell Me

This song is about moving on, where the character goes into a hyper-real fantasy world of the American dream - what she really wants is the world she’s seen on film, that only lives in her head. I was born in the UK, I am mixed race and often find it difficult to feel like I belong anywhere. I wanted to create a set of songs inspired by 80s and 90s pop, as if each song were a scene in a movie.

'War' is about those everyday silent rivalries and intrigues we face in ordinary situations. At work, in families, at garden parties. All very repressed and polite - it describes a ‘civilised’ war, revealing the underlying humanity of how we really want to react when we feel threatened, underneath the social facade.

‘One Summer’s Day’, draws listeners into a love story about a girl learning to drive one summer in Turkey and meeting a guy who offers to let her borrow his very fancy car. The track paints a whimsical, soundscape of a nostalgic summer, full of dreams and unrequited love.

Incorporating pop, synth-pop and pop rock, Indiana Tonight is a cool, electric guitar-driven carried by Jay’s unique soft vocal style and lyrics that tell a story.  

The song journals two lovers meeting up after time apart and the woman realising she is not ready to give up her new found freedom and autonomy at the cost of this romance.

I wrote this two days before the release of the album and put it online at a hidden url. The url was in morse code on the last track of the album. 

It's the story of a painful affair and the welcome home after it's over.

Traces (Little Deaths Hidden Track)

I was inspired by hearing someone say the line "the ghost of sex workers past" and went off and wrote this song. I wanted it to have both a Christmas and a spooky vibe but keep some sort of sweetness to it as well.

With her unique lyrical style Jay explores themes of love and belonging in her music, writing each song as though it is a scene in a movie. 

Jay had her first radio play in 2018 when Bob Fischer played her on BBC Radio Tees. With repeated support from local radio, this spurred her to develop as an artist and challenge herself in her songwriting. She went on to have tracks played on BBC 6 Music. Called 'genre-defying' by Tom Robinson, Jay is a Sage Summer Studios alumni and an awardee of the Do It Differently Fund through Help Musicians (2021)
