EOS Radio Show - June '22

NYC’s Despina brings their signature metallic palette to the 909 mix series. Someone we’ve had our eye on for a while now through their releases on Kindergarten and All Centre, Despina is quickly becoming known for their thrilling take on club music. I think RA described their All Centre release as ‘unhinged’ and it feels like an appropriate word to describe this session. It’s robotic, sometimes spiralling out of control before commanding back into action with high energy rollers and percussive-driven rhythms. It has left me very very eager to see them play in a club setting. This itch needs to be scratched asap!

In this 1 hour mix we take a deep dive into the hypnotic voyage, exploring the realm of experimental bass music. Setting the tone with atmospheric, progressive jungle and deep idm which then takes a journey into heavy bass and footwork slowly moving down the tempo line, finishing with percussive techno, deep trance & dubstep. This mix was one of my favourite shows to make as it’s a mixture of sounds I like to experiment with during my sets.

@cassius-select is a rhythm master. His grooves twist and turn you inside out and contort themselves into bold new forms. Drawing on the weight of bass music and the skip of garage, he has landed on labels like Matthew Herbert’s Accidental JNR and Banoffee Pies over the last few years. The Canadian - who is also one half of SUMAC Sound System - is now based in Hong Kong and continues to serve up killer club tracks with eerie vocal sounds and alien sound designs that make each and every production standout. 

His mix for us is just as unique. It starts off by skating on low riding skeletal rhythms, bumping on stripped back bass and drawing you in with a rich array of vocal, percussive and synth details. Just as you think it’s all set to explode, the dexterous DJ draws back to a murky world of bass and dub then rebuilds with a more high pressure sound before ending on some blissed out r&b. It’s dark, sweet and thoroughly seductive.
