The Jazzinstitut established its own concert series in its intimate concert space built in the cave underneath its current residence. For a series entitled „JazzTalk“ we invite musicians for a regular concert followed by a public interview onstage highlighting their aesthetic ideals, influences, the troubles of working musicians and the directions in which they see the music moving. Every now and then the series moves to other places. 

For this edition our guest was the Cologne-based saxophonist, arranger, composer and sound-engineer Caroline Thon, who played with her quintett Patchwork at the cultural center Bessunger Knabenschule in Darmstadt.

For this edition of the JazzTalk our guests were the pianist, arranger, composer Vladyslav Sendecki (*1955), and drummer, teacher, composer Janusz Maria Stefanski (1946-2016), who eventually performed as a duo. Both, born in Poland, have lived in Germany for decades and were prolific represantatives of the Western German jazz scene. Sendecki still is the pianist of the NDR-Bigband. Janusz Stefanski died on November, 4 2016 in Frankfurt.

JazzTalk053: Wolfram Knauer im Gespräch mit Janusz Stefanski & Valdyslav Sendecki

This interview was recorded on June 07, 2001 at Jazzinstitut Darmstadt. The interview has been held in German.

For this edition of the JazzTalk our guests were the baritonsax-player, composer and musicologist Ekkehard Jost (1938-2017) and his German-Italian Band Transalpin Express. 

Ekkehard Jost died during the night from 23 to 24 March 2017 at the age of 79. Ekkehard Jost was the doyen of jazz research as a musicological field in Germany, a representative of systematic musicology whose books and analytical insights changed the discourse about jazz and improvised music far beyond our country. He also was an excellent baritone saxophone player with a deep admiration for the sound of Gerry Mulligan, a fascination with the risks of free improvisation, and a political consciousness in many of his later compositions, among them a suite of songs from the Spanish civil war. We will miss him as a friend, as a critical supporter and as a strong and insightful partner in discussions about the music.

Botschafter des Jazz. Frankfurter Musiker beim 2. Sopot Festival 1957

The Jazzinstitut Darmstadt, a municipal institute of the city of Darmstadt, is Europe's largest public research archive on jazz. It holds specialized books, periodicals, sheet music, records, photographs as well as posters and other memorabilia. It provides services for researchers (journalists, musicologists, students), as well as for the music community, for musicians and music educators, working to broaden the audience of jazz as an African American music which has become a major influence on world culture. The Jazzinstitut Darmstadt is the foremost institute of its kind in Europe and acknowledged for its varied services by American colleagues as well. The Jazzinstitut resides in a small baroque palais built 1709-1725. The historical cave underneath the Jazzinstitut is being used for intimate concerts, among them the concert series "JazzTalk".
