Night Peeps - Time to Reflect - UK Deephouse - PUR 9-11-2024

ROUND MIDNIGHT was a film by Bertrand Tavernier starring Dexter Gordon. This event was part of celebrating "Dex@90" at the 56th Monterey Jazz Festival on September 21, 2013 in the Jazz Theater.

This week's #disquietjunto prompt was to create a sonic environment and record it.

This was *very* different from how I normally operate, so it was a good challenge! I started by brainstorming a list of sound devices in my apartment that can generate changing sounds on their own, including modular gear and radios but also electric fans, teapots, etc.

For the sake of time I ended up using the clicking of my toaster oven as the core tempo. I layered that with a metronome at a slightly different tempo, run through a Makenoise Strega, and a metronome app on my phone (also at a slightly different tempo).  I layered that with a feedback loop on my laptop (running Ableton) and the sound of my teapot. My space heater also made an unintended appearance.

(I wanted the metronomes to perform some phasing, but I think the tempos were too fast. Ah well.)

Once the recording as done, I did a bit of processing in Ableton. I used Klevgrand's Gaffel to split the recording into four frequency ranges, and applied a bit of processing to each range. The lowest frequencies got a bit of Ableton' Resonator to occasionally generate tones. The "mid lo" range got a tape plug-in to generate some "warmth."  The "mid hi" frequencies got a flanger to add some motion, and the highest frequencies got some serious EQ to prevent them from becoming ear-piercing.

The final step was to add a gate with some filter delay on it - whenever there is an especially loud noise, it gets a little bit of dub delay.

‘Hat-trick’ has three simultaneous layers – hence the title: 1st  layer are pentatonic chords that progress and change, 2nd layer are sequences of pentatonic melodies but use all 12 different notes. The 3rd layer has what is called a ‘ground bass’ and this is like a stand for the hats and coats to hang on. I play piano, there is double bass player – Dave Storer, and on drums – Charles Sheinman. It was recorded in North London - October 2002. ‘Mosaics #2’ has Jim Dvorak playing trumpet, Rob Townsend – alto saxophone, Stu Butterfield – drums and Olly Blanchflower – double bass, and was recorded in the summer of 1996. The final piece – ‘Eastern Spirals’ is the trio again.
